This Constitution will be accepted and will take effort when it has been approved by nine states. Done in convention by the unanimous consent of the states present on September 17, 1787, in the twelfth year of our independence.

The Constitution was approved by nine states on June 21, 1788. It went into effect as the supreme law of the land on March 4, 1789. George Washington took office as the first President in April 1789. By the summer of 1790, all 13 states had approved the Constitution.
