FAQ

How does my child get picked?

Teachers refer students who are struggling in class but are not generally a behavioral or attendance concern. The type of students we look for are those who want to succeed but simply need a bit more support in the school setting to be successful. If your student has not been referred, but they want to join the program, they should contact Mrs. Toth at ktoth@csd99.org to talk about how to join.

What happens in the program?

Teachers and peer tutors sit down with your student and work on organization as well as homework completion/understanding of content. They also work collaboratively to check grades, set goals, and monitor their progress moving forward.  Lastly, if your child simply needs "time" and a quiet space to work, which we can provide as well.

Where and when does my kid report once enrolled?

The program runs on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 3:30-4:20 in A203.

How can my child get home from this after-school program?

Our students are always released in time to get on the activity busses for their ride home. Parents are also welcomed to pick students up at 4:20.

What if my child has to miss a day?

Once students are enrolled, attendance is mandatory. If a student has to miss for some reason, email Mrs. Toth at ktoth@csd99.org

Do they have to remain in the program all year?

We evaluate grades and progress regularly. If your student has found success and is ready to leave the program, we have a conversation with them and transition them out of the program. If they still need the support and the program is working for them, they are also able to remain in the program.

If your student is concerned due to sports/activities, talk to the coordinator (ktoth@csd99.org) individually to make a plan. Once they are performing in the classroom, we do encourage them to get out on the court!

What if my student is unsure about joining the program? Who can they talk to?

Students who enroll in STRIVE may be hesitant at first. After all, MORE TIME IN SCHOOL? However, a great majority of our students in STRIVE admit to being grateful for the program and for its assistance in making their freshmen year successful. Students develop strong relationships with tutors and mentors and with regular attendance, students’ grades increase dramatically in most cases. If your son or daughter is unsure that this program will work for them, please let me know and I can meet with them individually. If that doesn’t help, we can also set up a time that they can meet a former STRIVE student and hear about the program straight from the source.
