Plan Freshman Classes & Beyond
Plan Your Classes
To start the process of creating a freshman year schedule, 8th grade teachers have been sharing course recommendations with DGN for English, Math & Science. Final placement will be determine by DGN Department Chairs. In some cases, students taking a Level 1 World Language (Spanish & French) class this year are also being recommended.
In addition to the core classes of English, Math, and Science, incoming freshmen will also automatically be enrolled in Global Connections (Social Studies), Physical Education and a lunch period. This will allow TWO full periods remaining for students to choose course electives. Students must take a minimum of six classes. Many freshmen choose to take a full period study hall for one of their periods and one elective. Other students will choose to take seven classes. This decision is specific to the student. It is best for the student to understand their strengths, their passions and their interests. Course rigor balance is vital to a student's academic success as well as social emotional health. When choosing electives, keep in mind the courses one take as well as the activities one will be involved with during Freshman year.
Begin your course planning with the end in mind. Be aware of department capstone courses. The upper level courses will include many prerequisite courses a student must complete in order to enroll. It is highly encouraged to create a 4 year plan. A student can create many and adjust accordingly.
Should a student question their level of rigor, it is best to gather feedback from current content teachers, DGN Department Chairs and/or a DGN School Counselor. Optional appointments to meet with DGN School Counselors will be made available on January 30, 2021. These appointments will be a great opportunity to discuss course balance and 4 year plans with DGN experts.
