Course-specific AI

Overview

We have created a custom, course-specific GPT for CSE 341, which we are calling Camille (as in OCaml). Camille is the only generative AI tool approved for use in CSE 341-- any use of any other generative AI is prohibited and will be treated as academic misconduct.

Generative AI can be a powerful tool to support learning and help people develop new knowledge and skills. However, its use comes with a risk of offloading too much of the learning process to the tool, resulting in learning less than you would have otherwise, especially when the tool does not properly understand the context of the interactions. Camille has been calibrated to have appropriate context for CSE 341 and to provide interactions that are supportive, conducive to learning, and appropriate for the educational environment.

Camille can provide explanations of topics covered in class, offer small examples of language constructs or approaches, and provide some support on homework assignments. It is useful way to get assistance when office hours or the message board are unavailable or inconvenient. However, while it has access to most course materials, it is not a replacement for reviewing those materials directly or interacting with the course staff in office hours or on the message board. Also, like all AI tools, Camille can make mistakes.

You will never need to use Camille to be successful in this course. All materials Camille has access to are also on the course website or otherwise published, and you can always ask questions in class, in office hours, or on the message board. If you prefer not to engage with generative AI, you will not be at a disadvantage.

Rules

Use of Camille is subject to the following rules:

• Exclusivity: Camille is the only generative AI tool approved for use in CSE 341. You may not use any other generative AI tools in any way. See the academic integrity policy for details.

  • Be especially careful with the "New Chat" and similar buttons in Camille's UI-- these may bring you to general ChatGPT, which is not allowed for use. Make sure you see the CSE 341 logo.

• Accountability: If you choose to use Camille to help with homework assignments, you must submit the full, unedited transcripts of your interactions along with your work.

• Integrity: All interactions with Camille must be in good faith, with the intent of using the tool as it was designed. Attempts to "jailbreak" Camille (i.e. to get it to act in a way that it is not intended to act or to provide information it is not intended to provide), or other interactions that are not in good faith, will be considered academic misconduct and treated accordingly.

  • If you believe you have inadvertently caused Camille to provide you information it should not have, notify us immediately and we will work with you to mitigate the situation. If you alert us immediately and make your best attempt to not use the information you received, we will not treat it as misconduct. See the amnesty policy for more details.

Best Practices

To get the most out of your use of Camille, and to ensure you are still learning the course material, we recommend following these best practices:

• Start on your own: Spend a solid amount of time (at least 30-60 minutes or so) working through a concept or problem before turning to Camille. If you are able to grasp the concept or understand the problem on your own, that is success!

• Prefer human interaction: If you need assistance, post on the course message board and/or visit office hours before asking Camille. Course staff will generally be able to provide better answers, and will be better able to adapt to your specific needs. 

• Treat it like staff: Don't try to get Camille to tell you something you wouldn't expect course staff to tell you. Ask questions the same way you would of a TA or instructor.

• Seek support, not answers: Ask questions that help you build your understanding, and look for opportunities to use what you learned on future problems or concepts. Try to ask broad questions and apply the answers to the problem at hand yourself rather than asking questions too specific to what you are working on.

• Answer its questions: Camille will usually end its response with a question hinting at next steps or important things to understand. Answering these questions yourself will help you build your understanding now and set you up for greater success in the future.

• Verify everything: If something seems wrong, it very well might be! Verify all responses and information with an authoritative source (course website, course staff, official language documentation, etc.). Incorrect information from Camille will not be considered valid grounds for a regrade request or other accommodations.
