As we pedaled onwards, the road took us through Kaudiyala and Devprayag, each bend revealing new facets of the Ganges and its surrounding hills. A notable stop at the Dhari Devi Temple provided a moment of reflection and spiritual rejuvenation, adding a deeper dimension to our journey. The ride then took me to the spiritual heart of Varanasi, via Rewa and Mirzapur, where I explored the city’s ancient ghats and vibrant streets. After covering 100 kilometers within Varanasi, I returned to Fatehpur and finally made my way back to IIT Roorkee, completing the exhilarating 3500-kilometer circuit.In addition to the extensive bike ride, I embarked on a memorable 1500-kilometer car journey. Starting from Fatehpur, I drove to Jaipur, stopping at the revered Khatu Shyam Ji Temple. After a night’s stay, we visited the Mehendipur Balaji Temple and continued to Vrindavan to experience the spiritual ambiance of Prem Mandir. Our journey then led us to Agra, where we marveled at the iconic Taj Mahal before returning to Fatehpur. This three-day road trip was a whirlwind of religious and historical exploration, adding another layer of richness to the adventure.The final leg of the journey included a 1500-kilometer train trip to New Delhi for some important personal work. The bustling capital offered a brief yet vibrant interlude, with a few hours spent in Connaught Place meeting with acquaintances. Nestled in the Aglar Valley of Tehri Garhwal district, this ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is surrounded by dense deodar forests and lush green meadows. The legend behind the temple adds to its mystical allure: it is said that a cowherd discovered a self-manifested Shivlinga after following a trail of spilled milk from his cow. This Shivlinga, believed to be imbued with divine power, resisted an attempt by Gorkhas to uproot it, and a piece that broke off was carried to Devalsari, where the temple now stands.The journey itself was nothing short of magical, especially during the monsoon season. The ride took me through the scenic mountain roads of Dehradun, Mussoorie, and Dhanaulti. The lush greenery, enhanced by the rains, provided a breathtaking backdrop. By nightfall, we reached Sonprayag, where we found shelter to rest before the most grueling part of our journey: the trek to Kedarnath.The next day, we started our 27 km trek from Sonprayag due to a landslide, which extended the usual 22 km route from Gaurikund to Kedarnath. This trek, which took us over eight hours, tested our stamina and willpower. The steep inclines, rocky paths, and narrow trails, combined with unpredictable weather, made every step feel like a conquest. But the breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks, flowing rivers, and cascading waterfalls were more than rewarding. By evening, we finally reached Kedarnath and were greeted by the majestic sight of the temple surrounded by towering mountains. Spending the night amidst its divine energy, I visited Assi Ghat at 3:00 AM, soaking in the serene beauty of the Ganges under the moonlight, and returned again at 9:00 AM to witness its bustling morning vibe. With my soul rejuvenated, I began the 260 km ride back to Fatehpur, completing the bike leg of my journey.The second part of my adventure took me to Gorakhpur, where I attended the wedding of a junior and paid a visit to the revered Gorakhnath Temple, immersing myself in its peaceful ambiance. From there, I ventured 90 km to the Sonauli border with Nepal and crossed over to visit Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha. Though short, my time in Lumbini was deeply enriching. I soon returned to Gorakhpur and began my journey back to Fatehpur for a brief rest. Upon reaching Prayagraj around 5:00 pm, we awaited another friend arriving from Varanasi, whose train was delayed, finally arriving at 10:00 pm. From the station, we commenced a challenging overnight walk to Triveni Sangam, covering approximately 30 kilometers amidst dense crowds and limited transportation options. Arriving near the Sangam at 4:00 am, we rested briefly under the open sky before taking our holy dip around 8:00 am. My first stop was in Warsaw, Poland, on the 2nd day. Luckily, my layover was over 24 hours long, giving me a chance to step out and experience Warsaw’s vibrant culture. By pure luck, my visit coincided with the Wianki Festival, one of Poland’s most famous summer celebrations, marked by live music, cultural performances, and fireworks along the Vistula River. I spent the night in Warsaw, taking in the European charm, the architecture of the Old Town, and the lively streets filled with locals and tourists celebrating the festival.On the morning of the 3rd day, I returned to Warsaw Airport and took my flight to Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Upon arrival, I rested that night in anticipation of my academic commitments. From the 4th day, my three-day conference officially began. I spent my days attending technical sessions, networking with researchers from around the world, and proudly presenting my own research. The 5th day included exploring Cluj, a charming and historical city with beautiful Gothic architecture, cobbled streets, and vibrant squares like Unirii Square. In the evening, I attended the conference banquet dinner, which gave me the opportunity to engage in more casual conversations with fellow academics. On the 6th day, after presenting my second paper, I took a bus journey to Budapest, Hungary, which is known for its stunning nightlife along the Danube River, illuminated Buda Castle, and Chain Bridge. After a night of exploration, I spent the 7th day exploring Budapest’s morning beauty, visiting famous sites like Fisherman's Bastion, Parliament Building, and local markets, and then returned to Cluj by bus later that evening. Finally, on the 8th day, I caught my return flights from Cluj to Warsaw and Warsaw to New Delhi, arriving on the 9th day back in India. From Delhi, I took the morning train back to Roorkee, ending my journey with a heart full of memories of Europe’s architecture, culture, and academic achievements.
Carrying the Kawad, Carrying Memories: My 30th Birthday Story
This year, my 30th birthday was not just a celebration, but an unforgettable spiritual and adventurous journey. Instead of spending the day with a cake or a party, I chose something different—an experience that would stay with me forever. Along with one of my juniors and one of my seniors from IIT Roorkee, I set out on a bike trip to Haridwar, riding tripling from our campus. Our destination was the sacred ghats of Har Ki Pauri, where thousands of devotees gather daily to connect with the holy Ganga. Standing at the banks of the river, we joined the tradition and took a sacred dip in the chilled waters of the Ganga, which felt purifying and refreshing at the same time. After this ritual, we prepared a kawad to collect the holy water and decided to carry it all the way back to our IIT Roorkee campus temple—covering nearly 40 kilometers on foot. That decision marked the beginning of a journey filled with devotion, endurance, and teamwork.Carrying the kawad was not just about physical effort, but also about faith and responsibility. We took turns shouldering it throughout the long walk, ensuring that the kawad remained balanced and safe. At first, my senior carried it while my junior walked beside him to provide support in case anything went wrong. After a few kilometers, the junior took over, and I walked with him while the senior rode the bike to manage our logistics. In this way, we continued step by step, rotating the roles and motivating each other as the distance seemed endless. Finally, after hours of walking, we reached the campus temple, where we offered the sacred water and performed the rituals with complete devotion. The sense of accomplishment, mixed with spiritual peace, made me realize that this was not just another birthday—it was a milestone moment of my life. On the day I officially turned 30, I celebrated not with grandeur, but with faith, friendship, and an experience that truly touched my heart.
Five Days, Endless Rain, and Unforgettable Friendship in Uttarakhand
When one of my closest B.Tech friends visited Uttarakhand for the very first time, I wanted to make sure his five-day stay turned into an unforgettable memory. Since I am living inside the IIT Roorkee campus, it was the perfect base to plan our journey. As it was the peak monsoon season, I had to carefully choose places that were famous yet relatively safe from landslides, though the rain followed us everywhere we went. On the first day, we headed to Dehradun and explored the lively city roads at night until heavy showers forced us to return. The second day was reserved for Mussoorie, but before reaching the hill station, we stopped at the majestic Forest Research Institute (FRI) in Dehradun, a colonial-era campus known for its stunning architecture and sprawling green lawns. Riding further uphill, we finally reached Mussoorie, checked into our hotel, and settled in for the night, listening to the sound of rainfall outside.The third day brought a mix of adventure and disappointment due to the weather. We trekked to the top of George Everest, where the misty winds and cloudy skies created a dramatic atmosphere, and later went to Landour to explore the famous Char Dukan. Sadly, the clouds and heavy rains blocked the view of Lal Tibba, and we couldn’t enjoy its cozy cafés the way we had hoped. On the fourth day, we checked out from Mussoorie and began our ride towards Rishikesh, making a few stops on the way. We reached Robber’s Cave in Dehradun but couldn’t enter because of flooding, so we diverted to the Buddha Temple instead. The calm ambiance of the temple and the Tibetan food we tried nearby made the stop worthwhile. By evening, we rolled into Rishikesh, checked into a hotel, and rode around the city circuit from old to new Rishikesh, enjoying the spiritual vibes despite the gloomy skies. On the final day, my friend’s flight was scheduled in the evening, so we had a relaxed breakfast, took one last ride along the scenic route, and then I dropped him at Dehradun Airport. Even though the monsoon weather limited what we could do, the trip was a perfect blend of friendship, mountain charm, and the joy of exploring Uttarakhand together for the very first time.
2000 Kilometers of Rain, Roads, and Resilience: My Longest Ride of 2025
Just a few days after completing a five-day mountain trip with my friend, I set out on what would become my longest ride of 2025—covering nearly 2000 kilometers in total. The route took me from IIT Roorkee campus to my hometown, then onwards to Varanasi, and finally back the same way to Roorkee. It was a ten-day journey, planned partly due to urgent work at home but also carrying the spirit of adventure that long rides always bring. The first half of the ride from Roorkee to home was smooth and enjoyable, but the second half turned into a test of endurance. For almost 300 kilometers, I rode through very heavy rainfall that soaked me completely, leaving all my riding gear wet and unbearably heavy. It felt like riding through hell—each kilometer dragging, visibility dropping, and exhaustion building—but the love for the road and the sheer determination to complete the ride kept me going until I finally reached home.After spending a few days resting and recovering at home, I set off again, this time towards Varanasi to meet two of my B.Tech friends who are staying there. The ride was refreshing, and the city itself was as vibrant and spiritual as ever. We explored Varanasi together, experiencing its ghats, streets, and the timeless charm that makes the city so special. I stayed for two nights, after which I rode back home once again. This time, the stay was even more meaningful, as I got the chance to celebrate Rakshabandhan and Janmashtami with my family. The trip beautifully blended together the thrill of long rides, the joy of friendship, and the warmth of family celebrations. After a few more days at home, I finally rode back to IIT Roorkee, closing the loop on my longest journey of the year. Though the rain and exhaustion had tested me, this ride gave me memories that were worth every single kilometer.
