In Luke 15, Jesus weaves a story of a shepherd who lost a sheep. While it was just one sheep out of many, this lost sheep was dearly loved by the shepherd. It was the shepherd’s job to rescue and protect the sheep in His care.
While the little sheep wandered away with threats surrounding, the lamb was left hopeless, vulnerable, and unable to help himself. The shepherd lays aside personal comfort for the sake of the one lamb. Although he had many sheep to concern himself with He puts himself at risk to go after the one. The shepherd willingly ventures away from safety and community out of a compelling love for this one sheep.
We’re invited to join in the Luke 15 story. We have a part to play. “For the Sake of the One” outreach will push us to go with the Shepherd after the ones around us who don’t know Him. During this week we are going to step out in faith to share the gospel with three people. It could be with those already in our relational worlds or it could be someone God puts in front of us that particular week.
To engage our hearts and equip our hands we will get trained in how to share our faith, have weekly talks by our Winter Conference speakers to engage our hearts, and be resourced in how to start the conversations.

Thank you for taking part in what we hope to be a great opportunity to come together as one movement for the sake of the gospel. The purpose of this guide is to help you have all the information you need to pull off a successful post Winter Conference outreach in your context.
For the Sake of the One comes from the story in Luke 15. Jesus weaves the story of a shepherd who leaves his flock of 99 to go after one lost lamb. Why? Because of love. Because of care. Because it was at the very heart of the shepherd to do so. It came at a cost for sure. The shepherd had to spend time and energy, it moved him out of safety, made him push past fear, and yet it was so worth it to him to help the one little lamb find his way home.
In For the Sake of the One we are asking both staff and students to give up comfort and ease for the sake of the ones in their lives who don’t know Christ yet. It's going to take huge faith to trust God for at least three opportunities to share the Gospel in one week, and yet we believe our King is worth it. Think of how God could use thousands of college students banding together and going after the ones in their lives who don’t know Christ.
Here’s all the details you need to know to make it a great week...
Timeline
Feb 5 & 6-- National Winter Conference
Feb 8-14-- For the Sake of the One outreach week.
Starting Monday, trust God to share the gospel with at least three people this week
Feb 15-21-- Outreach follow-up and Celebration
During the outreach
What’s happening
Students and staff are engaging with people with the hope of sharing the gospel at least three times this week. (wouldn’t it be cool if after students and staff got a taste of what Jesus might do during this outreach that they were so excited they just kept going. To 4… 5...7… 15 conversations!)
Who are we sharing with? Could be people already in your relational sphere- family, friends, coworkers, classmates OR it could be people God puts in your path this week- at the store, in the student union, someone in class they’ve never really talked to.
How are these conversations happening? It will depend on your campus realities- use zoom or be in person- engage however you’re able to with those around you.
What you need to know
We will be sending texts to the students who signed up for the outreach (by texting Share3 to (833) 560-0391) throughout the week to encourage them, give links to training videos, and gather stats.
***You will know who signed up for the outreach because we will send out a list the Sunday after WC
They have a bookmark from their WC swag bags that give them the details, conversation guide, and timeline for this outreach. They also received two KGPs. You can print more bookmarks by going to the WC google site. You can order more KGPs on the Cru staff store or encourage students to use the God Tools App.
You can find the outreach training videos on the WC google site
You have access this week to a talk on the Holy Spirit’s role in evangelism by Elizabeth Woodson to use in whatever areas fit your context- discipleship, bible study, a weekly meeting. Access the talk on the WC google site
What you need to do
Pray!
Sign up for the outreach yourself by texting Share3 to (833) 560-0391.
Give students a time and place to get trained on the KGP (could be in discipleship, bible study, weekly meeting, or an additional event you set up)
Own this outreach yourselves, If you are going after the goal your students are way more likely to follow
Get students who weren’t at Winter Conference engaged and signed up for the outreach even if they start a few days late
As much as possible, have staff (and/or student leaders) take students sharing (if location allows)
Post Outreach Followup & Celebration
What's happening
We will take this week to follow up with people we talked to in whatever ways feel appropriate. Grab lunch with those you initiated a conversation with, send a EveryStudent.Com article that relates to a question they had, plan an additional hangout or keep sharing the gospel with others around you.
Celebrate what God did during the outreach by giving students an opportunity to gather (in person or virtually depending on location) and share with one another how they saw God move.
What you need to know
You have total creative freedom in designing what celebration will look like! Check out the guide at the bottom of this doc for ideas.
You have access this week to a talk on Building Relationships with lost people by Eric Rivera to use in whatever areas fit your context- discipleship, bible study, a weekly meeting. Find that here.
We will send out this google form to each participant who signed up to share their stories and stats. Please make sure to fill this out yourself.
What you need to do
Plan & run the celebration by choosing a date & time and way to gather.
Finish the month strong
You have access this week to a talk on continuing to walk with Jesus by Candice Siewert to use in whatever areas fit your context- discipleship, bible study, a weekly meeting. Find the talk here.
How to host an outreach celebration
***As you have experienced, things develop daily with COVID. We do request you honor Cru’s policies as well as your campuses’ policies on gathering to celebrate the for the sake of the one outreach. Please check your latest Cru Levels Chart before you start planning: Cru Levels. Other Questions about how COVID should impact your planning? Check Cru COVID Info Page***
Ideas for places to gather
Meet at a coffee shop and share stories over some good brew.
Have a parking lot BYO hot chocolate tailgate with sharing and worship.
Zoom it up and have people share virtually.
Order pizza and meet at an outdoor park, beach, or in a backyard (weather permitting).
Grab a on campus room, some snacks and hot drinks, and gather together for sharing.
Put them in small groups with printed out questions and a student or staff leader to lead through the sharing.
Ways to host a successful conversation
Designate an upbeat emcee to ask questions, recap stories, introduce the night and so on.
Involve everyone in sharing: to start, have everyone turn to a buddy to share a story from their week before moving to the big group.
Before you get going, encourage students to “ABC”-- Be audible (talk loud so everyone can hear). Be Brief (share a 30-60sec story). Be Christ centered (keep the focus on how Jesus worked).
Be ok with silence- don’t move on to the next person or wrap up the event too soon.
Stress that success is stepping out in faith, sharing the good news of the gospel, and leaving the results up to God. Celebrate whatever steps of faith students took whether it was one conversation, three, or ten and regardless of if people received Christ or not.
