Spain is often thought of as a deeply Catholic country. However, since the fall of the Franco dictatorship and its integration into Europe, Spain has seen a rapid acceptance of secularism. Only 17 percent of the population consider themselves practicing Catholics. Of the 1.6 million university students, most do not know even one person who follows Jesus.
Spanish students, however, are open to talking about spiritual issues and many are looking for meaning and purpose in their life. Agape Spain’s campus ministry Cristianos Universitarios (CU, or Q for short) works to build communities and spaces where Christian students can share their faith with seekers. We focus on our core values of Mission, Community, and Growth to build up a new generation of Spanish believers passionate about living the gospel on the university campus.
Cristianos Universitarios is reaching students on various campuses in the cities of Madrid, Barcelona, Málaga, Granada, and Santiago de Compostela. However, there are still dozens of universities and hundreds of thousands of students who lack access to Christian community and to the message of the gospel. There is a tremendous need in Spain.
We currently welcome people excited to learn the Spanish language and culture into one of our 5 staff teams.
Receiving Needs/Desires
Agape Spain is currently receiving students for short-term summer missions
Sending Opportunities/Desires
We are happy to welcome long term teams (STINT or longer) however we usually like to integrate these workers into existing national teams. However, we are open to looking at all options and opportunities.
It is key that potential partners understand that language is important. Spain has very low levels of credible English. Thankfully, most can become functional in Spanish within a matter of months, and fluent within a year!
