The ministry in Romania officially began in 1992, after years of underground activities during communism. Immediately after the revolution it was a great time to talk about God! Everyone was curious. Everyone wanted to hear about God. With a focus on university students, the topic of Jesus was raised again and again at a large dorm complex in Bucuresti. Students responded. Bible studies started. Lives were changed. Students started to talk about their faith. A movement began. Not long after this it started to spread, first to the Agricultural University, then to the Construction University. Before long a group of pioneers headed off to Cluj to begin the work there. A national movement was born.
At the same time that God work doing something special among students a new initiative started. Virgil Anderson arrived in Romania with a grand dream. He created the JESUS PROJECT which took the message of Christ’s love into all 40 counties of Romania. In the early years the JESUS Film was shown every night dozens of times in villages and small towns. People responded. In fact by the year 1999 over 400 churches had been started with this strategy.
But there is still great work to be done. Romania has less than 3% evangelical believers, most of them in the western counties.
Receiving Needs
Describe your need for receiving labourers and/or teams, both short and long term.
Short term team for projects or specific tasks:
Students who will dedicate one year to help the teams in Iasi, Brasov and Oradea
Long term team to serve in your country:
We are looking for a team of long term missionaries to restart the ministry in Cluj Napoca, the second largest university city.
Sending Opportunities
What sending is happening right now from your country? (Short term, long term, etc)
We have one short term mission project each Spring, sending students in European countries. So far we sent teams in Bulgaria and Italy.
We are planning to send another team of students from Catalytic cities to Serbia this year.
Also, we are using the Work&Travel in US as a sending opportunity. We train students and help them raise support so they can minister to students from other countries that come to work in Ocean City, Maryland, USA in partnership with local churches.
What are your dreams and vision for sending in within the next two years?
Romania was once a sending country. We had a team in China and we help starting the ministry in Novi Sad, Serbia.
In addition to sending teams of students once a year in Europe and through Ocean City we would like to develop a long term partnership with another country once again.
