For a number of years there were various initiatives from SLM UK, Italy and EuroSTINT at the University of Malta Campus. Agape Malta always supported these initiatives despite its limitations of not having a presence on Campus. Agape Malta always believed that at the appropriate time, youths who came from various ministries would help to set up the campus ministry at the University of Malta.
In 2020 a group of youths coming from Shine Malta started University and so we could launch the campus ministry through them. The start of was very positive but hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, just a few weeks after its beginning. Despite this, we still managed to hold online meetings and navigate through those difficult months and years.
As from 2022, we began holding the monthly meetings in person, in which we are focusing on spiritual formation. This was specifically requested by the students themselves. Currently there are 11 students connected to the Agape Malta Campus Ministry.
This year we had students who Graduated and showed the desire to remain connected. This request was in line with our aim to reach out beyond the UoM Campus and the subsequent need to have an appropriate name which identified the ministry better. The name 4Twelve was selected and comes from; 1 Tim 4:12 “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.”
The spiritual reality amongst the majority of Maltese Youths is that they may be in a phase of apathy towards anything related to spirituality - faith and ultimately God. Most would have heard about Christ through school or catechism but unfortunately never had the opportunity to enter into a relationship with Him. Our aim is to empower and equip the youths attending 4Twelve to connect with them and share their faith.
The needs of 4Twelve are various. On a practical level, we believe that a fixed location would give identity to this ministry. This is because the absolute majority of students do not reside on Campus and so they would not go back to attend meetings in the evenings. Currently we are holding meetings in leader’s houses. We also feel the need to continue being updated on new ways to reach out and keep in touch with the reality that students face, on campus and beyond, so that we can be more relevant on faith issues.
Opportunities available are threefold: (1) that students and youth in Malta are ready to engage in discussions. Even though they are not willing to go into faith issues, but they love to discuss. This creates the opportunity to share one’s faith. (2) The students who attend 4Twelve are quite mature in their faith and as such are ready to reach out to other youths. (3) To create opportunities where they can interact with students from other countries and reap benefits from attending conferences abroad.
