Many people in Ireland who associate with Christianity – either Roman Catholicism or Protestantism– may describe the core message of Christianity as ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’.
In his book, ‘How the Irish Saved Civilization’, Thomas Cahill wrote, “Without the Mission of the Irish Monks, who single-handedly refounded European civilization throughout the continent in the bays and valleys of their exile, the world that came after them would have been an entirely different one—a world without books. And our own world would never have come to be.” You may have heard stories about Saint Patrick kicking snakes out of Ireland, or read about the studious Irish monks hiding from Vikings in round towers–but today Christianity in Ireland is more of a memory, a hidden treasure of the past.
The people of Ireland are an ancient breed. Steeped in tradition, they possess a striking care for family, community and identity–until recent decades, families and communities were deeply rooted in the Catholic faith. Today, most Irish people pair an interest in questions about faith and spirituality with a hesitancy to trust any kind of organised religion.
Agape Ireland’s vision for universities in Ireland is to see Jesus– His life, death and resurrection– as one of the main talking points in student communities. We want to see the people of Ireland caught up with Jesus’ Great Commission as they were in previous times. We have a small but mighty campus staff team of 3, serving mainly in Dublin with connections to Galway, Cork and Limerick. Our main initiatives are Campus Evangelism, Group & One to One Discipleship and Digital Communications.
Receiving Needs
Short term team for projects or specific tasks:
Early October– connecting with new students, recruiting new potential student leaders and building momentum for our October Surfing Retreat Weekend Away.
February/ March- blitz week on Campuses in other cities to surface key students.
Long term team to serve in your country:
We have a need for long term staff to build up our SLM team. We have a small team of 1 full time staff and 2 interns in Dublin. We would love to build up our Dublin SLM team with the long term vision of sending SLM teams to other cities.
