Student population - 45000 students
Cities with university students - Tartu, Tallinn, Viljandi, Rakvere, Narva
Cities with staff teams - Tartu
Number of staff in SLM, how many staff teams, etc - 1 staff team in Tartu with 3 staff members. Our main focus right now is campus ministry in Tartu (Estonian university city), but we would also like to start a student-led ministry in Tallinn, the capital of Estonia and second-larger university city, where a couple bigger universities and colleges are also located
Religion/Faith statistics - Based on statistics in 2021 an estimated 29% of Estonian people believe in some religion. 71% of our population consider themselves as non-believers. The main religions of the whole population are Orthodoxy (16%) and Lutheranism (8%). Lutheranism is the first religion choice of Estonians. While 11% of Estonians believe in Lutheranism, only 3% of Estonians believe in Orthodoxy. People of other nationalities are primarily Orthodox. People who profess other religions (muslims etc) are 5% of the total population.
In 2011 the BBC considered Estonia the most non-believing country in the entire world. Located in Eastern Europe, bordering the Baltic Sea and Gulf of Finland, between Latvia and Russia, Estonia experienced persecution of all faiths under the Soviet occupation 1940-1988, but freedom of religion was established in 1988. Today most people nominally recognise Christianity's principles, but have little desire to commit themselves to Christ. However younger churches are growing.
Agape Estonia has a well-energised local team which is open to new ideas. They are actively recruiting more labourers and seeking to welcome a short-term international team which would have big effect on a small country. The younger Estonian generation speaks English very well meaning relationships can be formed quickly not matter how long you've been in the country.
Don't let the geography throw you; Estonia has beautiful and, for some, even exotic winters! Come enjoy lots of winter sports and skiing.
