A mountainous region landlocked between the Turkish, Russian and Persian empires, Armenia was the first state to adopt Christianity in the 4th century. According to tradition, 2 of Jesus' apostles, Bartholomew and Thaddeus, brought Christian teaching to Armenia in the first century. Christianity remains the dominant religion, with the majority of Armenians belonging to the Armenian Apostolic Church. For most Armenians (though it has started to change with the new generation), religion goes bone deep; to be Armenian is to be Christian, however, cultural Christianity, not relationship with Christ prevails. Religious freedom followed the collapse of the Soviet Union, but discrimination against minority religious groups persists. Tensions with neighboring, Islamic countries, whose ideals and values differ from Christianity, make life difficult for believers.
Armenia's current student movement desires more commitment among their students as they grow in grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ, increased multiplication and for students share their faith and testimonies in their campuses. They're also praying for God to open doors and clear paths for Armenia SLM Staff to be able to raise funds for the ministry.
Receiving Needs/Desires
Mission teams can make a lasting impact on the lives of students in Armenia, our Staff and others. The focus on spreading God’s love through different projects and activities. Armenians are hospitable and love having guests at their homes—especially foreigners who are likely to be greeted with warmth and a table piled with as much food as it can hold. Now about the need for receiving. Firstly, though Armenia is a predominantly Chritian country the main need of mission teams is because very often a lot Armenians hear about God and His love from foreigners with more open heart than from locals. It seems that the reason is that when locals talk too much about God and offer to pray people tend to think this person is a cult member, but, for example, when an American shares his/her testimony or sings Christian songs, it is perceived very positively. Secondly, Armenians do not have a lot of opportunities to travel so having cross-cultural experiences and relationships are very exciting to students. Finally, Teaching English is a natural and purposeful way to gain access and build relationships with students as they recognize the escalating demand for knowledge of the English language. English classes and clubs with native speakers have been a great foundational ministry and help missionaries and our Staff expand the impact of their labours.
Short term team for projects or specific tasks:
Short term projects can be outreach and connections to share the Gospel with college students through conversational English camps, clubs, trips and picnics.
Long term team to serve in your country:
These days everyone is trying to learn English. In many parts of the world teaching English has become a strategic tool for Christians in building up relationships and generating friendships that can open doors to evangelistic opportunities. Armenia is no exception. For years now our staff here has been using language classes as a way to reach out to young people. Long term native English speakers to serve in our country would be great for that purpose. Long term team serving in our country can help learners develop English skills with ongoing English classes in an environment of fellowship and faith. Also, a team could organize Bible studies on many different days and times to fit the schedules of our college students. It could be an incredible opportunity to grow in authentic friendships, engage in meaningful conversations.
Sending Opportunities/Desires
We as Christians believe that we are living at a time where the Gospel could spread faster, farther and with more effectiveness. Armenia was the first country in the world to adopt Christianity as a state religion in 301 A.D. Christianity has played an immensely important role in the shaping of the Armenian people for over 1,700 years. Religion has been an essential part of Armenian identity and has reshaped the course of history. As One of the dreams of Cru in Armenia has always been to reach reach our neighbouring Muslim countries for Christ. We want to fulfil this mission by taking the Gospel to numerous other Muslim countries.
