Cru is a campus ministry that is about two things: Jesus and Community. We think that Jesus is the greatest person to ever live and that our relationship with him is the most fulfilling thing on earth. We believe this so much that we want everyone at VT to have the opportunity to know him too. In fact, Jesus is really the whole reason we exist and he is the focus of our mission: Cru is a community where the gospel captures hearts, transforms lives and launches men and women into a lifelong adventure with Jesus.
The second thing we are about is community. Nobody likes to be alone and so we make it a priority to have an incredible community. While probably no one in Cru knows everyone else in Cru, there are so many interconnected groups of close-knit friends that there’s a place for everyone to get involved. But we don’t stop there. We’re not content to just all be a community together. We want our community to grow, which is where our love for Jesus and our natural desire for community come together.
There are so many ways to connect to our community: small group bible studies (we call them community groups), weekly large group meetings, conferences & retreats, etc. Keep checking our social media and website for more info. If you’re interested in getting plugged in you can fill out a connect card and we’ll reach out to you personally. If you have any other questions please don’t hesitate to contact us!
Meet Our Staff
We have an incredible staff family here with Cru at Virginia Tech. These men and women serve to ensure that every Hokie has an opportunity to hear and respond to the gospel. You can read a little about them here, but they would love to meet you in person at some of our Cru events on campus.
Rebecca Lansford
Team leader
Rebecca graduated from Virginia Tech in 2013 with a degree in Political Science. She has been serving with Cru since then and stepped into the campus director role in 2018. She loves being a Blacksburg townie and working with the amazing students at Virginia Tech, to reach the campus with the Gospel. Rebecca enjoys going on adventures, all things Johnny Depp, a good cup of coffee, and teaching spin classes.
Trey Moore
Team leader
Trey graduated from Virginia Tech in 2013 with his degree in engineering science and mechanics. While he grew up elsewhere in southwest Virginia, he has now found his true home in Blacksburg, Virginia and loves helping students find deep Christian community and grow in their love for Jesus. Trey’s wife Rebecca is not on staff with Cru, but works as a veterinarian in Roanoke, Virginia. Trey and Rebecca met during undergrad at VT, were married in 2015, and now live in Riner with their daughters Gracie and Addie.
The Rogers
Senior Staff
Evan and Jennifer serve with Cru’s Greek Ministry, reaching sororities and fraternities with the gospel. Jennifer served with Cru in Richmond for a few years after graduating from VCU in 2021. Evan graduated from Liberty University in 2022 and then made the move to Blacksburg to begin serving with Greeks. A few years in, they met, were married shortly after that, and have been serving together on our team since Fall 2024! Evan and Jennifer are most passionate about evangelism and sharing with those not yet reached with the gospel. They both love being active (hiking, weight lifting, and all of the sports) and Evan loves all things Boston (go Celtics)!
The Thoresens
Senior staff
Brady and Elisabeth graduated from Virginia Tech in 2022. Brady graduated with a degree in Aerospace Engineering, and Elisabeth graduated with an English Literature degree. They got married soon after graduation and were eager to join Virginia Tech Cru Staff as soon as possible. In their free time they enjoy reading, cooking/eating Mexican dishes, and listening to records.
The Imbiris
Staff
Originally from Papua, Indonesia, Gilbert came to study as an international student at a small university in Missouri. While studying, Amber and Gilbert met at a campus ministry that changed their lives for the gospel. They got married in 2014 and have four wonderful, life-giving children. After spending six years in North Carolina at seminary and helping plant a church, they have transitioned to Cru to work with the international students. They are passionate about living life together on mission with the students, and their kids love getting to interact with students from all over the world. As a family, they love all things Kansas City, being adventurous in the mountains, and anything with quality time!
The Montgomerys
Senior staff
Mike and Linda Montgomery were high school sweethearts who married in 1970 and spent their next 23 years moving around the world as an Air Force family. In 2005, they joined Cru Military staff, applying their military experience and love for God’s word to minister to active duty families. Mike and Linda transitioned to Cru Valor at Virginia Tech in 2017, focusing on discipling ROTC cadets and developing outreach to military veterans returning to campuses. They are the parents of two married children and, if asked, are sure to tell you about their 10 grandchildren.
Utah Kershner

Utah graduated from Virginia Tech in May 2022 with a degree in Human Development. He has been on the staff team at Virginia Tech since. Having just bought his first house, he is officially a Blacksburg townie. His favorite things are reading, watching Hokie sports, traveling, spending time with friends, asking good questions, and his newest favorite activity, pickleball. He loves buying people coffee and talking about life, theology, and your walk with Jesus. He is currently pursuing a seminary degree in Ministry Leadership from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary.

He has been on multiple summer missions with Cru as a student, as staff, and as a Team Leader. His favorite thing he has done with Cru was leading the Summer Mission to Brazil in 2026! He loves to travel, spend time with his friends, drink coffee, play pickleball, watch any and all VT sports, beat his disciples at everything he plays with them, and just do adventurous things. His favorite quote is "Just because you're trash doesn't mean you can't succeed. It's called a garbage CAN, not a garbage cannot."
