If you are an incoming 9th grader, here is the information you need!
Q: I didn't do vocal music in middle school. Can I still sing in high school? Am I too far behind?
A: Of course you can sing in high school! The head choir director at Kennedy didn't even start singing seriously until college and he's running the program! It is never too late to start singing!
Q: How can I fit choir and show choir into my class schedule?
A: Choir/show choir only takes up one block of your day! You can do both without sacrificing another class!
Q: I'm in band or orchestra? Do they meet at the same time as choir? Can I do both?
A: They do not meet at the same time. You can do both! Don't let you counselors tell you it won't work! It works for our students all the time.
Q: I'm worried about doing show choir and sports/drama/speech/clubs... Is this possible?
A: It sure is!! Our choirs have starting football and basketball players, our most involved actors and actresses, and our award-winning speech students. We are very good at sharing kids with other programs in the building and working out conflicts with other coaches and directors.
Q: What about choir/show choir and advanced classes or world languages?
A: No problem. The highest performing academic students in the school are also involved in the music department.
Q: What if I try High School Choir/Show Choir and I don't like it?
A: What!? That's impossible! You're going to love it! Give it a try first! But if it winds up not being for you, we'll help you find something that is a better fit!
Q: I asked my counselor some of these questions and he/she had different answers than you. Why?
A: Counselors have a HUGE job and can't possibly know all the details of every program up at the high school. They are giving you great advice based on what they know. But when it comes to making music work for kids in high school, the directors are the experts! We will be honest with you about your situation and the benefits and challenges of being a high school musician. So, please talk to us about conflicts or concerns you have about your schedule.
