It's hard to believe we are wrapping up the school year and prepping for our fun and exciting summer programming that starts next week!
Right From the HeART is a collaborative program between
artsPlace and Right From the Start (RFTS).
Launched in 2020, the program brings together artsPlace
artists and RFTS Success Coaches to explore mental wellness
through creative expression. With generous support from the
Wim and Nancy Pauw Foundation, this meaningful initiative
continues to grow and thrive in the Bow Valley.
Each year, the program works with varying grades at
Lawrence Grassi Middle School, Banff Elementary, Elizabeth
Rummel School, and Alpenglow School. Programming is
tailored to each group’s age and needs, focusing on themes
like personal values, self-expression, problem-solving,
positive thinking, social interactions, respect, and confidence.
Students gathered for 5 sessions with RFTS and the artist
to engage in thoughtful conversations and hands-on
creative art. Their final artwork reflects not only their
creativity, but also meaningful insights into mental wellness
and self-discovery.

As we move through the winter season, families often face unique challenges related to mental health. It can sometimes be a challenge to maintain balance during the holidays. Understanding available resources and strategies can make a significant difference. Right from the Start would like to offer ways to support your family’s mental health during this time.
Staying Mentally Healthy Over the Winter Break
The winter holiday season, while joyous, can also be a source of stress. Routines are disrupted, social pressures increase, and the lack of structure may lead to challenges in managing emotions. Here are some tips to promote mental well-being:
Maintain Routines: While it’s tempting to let schedules slide, maintaining consistent meal times, sleep schedules, and activity routines can help everyone feel grounded.
Encourage Open Communication: Create a space where family members can share their feelings without judgment. Listening actively to your children can help them feel supported.
Practice Gratitude: Engage in daily reflections on things you’re thankful for as a family. This practice can boost mood and foster positive thinking.
Limit Overcommitment: The holidays often come with numerous invitations and obligations. Prioritize what matters most to your family and don’t hesitate to say no to avoid burnout.
Stay Active: Physical activity is a proven stress reliever. Go for a family walk, play in the snow, or have an indoor dance party!.
Set Screen Time Boundaries: While it’s fine to enjoy holiday movies or video games, ensure that screen time doesn’t overshadow other activities like reading, crafting, baking/cooking, or face-to-face interactions.
Leveraging Community Resources
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, remember that community support is often just a call or click away.

Please Remember
Mental health is a journey, not a destination. By embracing community resources and adopting mindful practices at home, families can navigate the challenges of the winter season with resilience and joy. Remember, fostering mental well-being is a collective effort, and small, consistent actions can make a lasting impact.
On behalf of the RFTS team, we wish you a safe holiday and a Happy New Year!
