SCIENCE
There is no such thing as poor weather but only poor choices of clothing. You will be outside each day, so bringing a proper jacket (rain jacket for those wet days and a warm winter jacket for the cold days) for whatever the day may bring. In winter, you should have mitts, a warm hat and warm waterproof boots. Making sure that you are prepared for all types of weather will allow us to get outside as much as possible throughout the school year.
Physical Education gym strip - Please send non marking gym shoes to participate in PE class when we are finally allowed to use the gym again. You also should have appropriate, supportive footwear/running shoes during gym and Daily Physical Activity (DPA).
Please make sure to have indoor shoes once the weather starts to get wet (it is not essential right now). We like to keep our class clean enough to sit on the floor if you like working there!
As there are growing people in here, I definitely allow students to have small, healthy, quiet snacks during class time. Please refrain from bringing sugary morning snacks (sugary snacks greatly reduces student attention). Eating healthy snacks in the morning greatly increases student engagement and focus which will help your learning.
You are encouraged to drink plenty of water throughout the day. I will encourage students to bring home their water bottles at the end of each week so that they can be cleaned. Please send them back on Monday morning.
Environmental responsibility and stewardship will be a major theme this year. When possible, please pack your lunch in REUSABLE containers. Students are to bring home any snack and lunch garbage that they bring to school.
We do have students with severe allergies to peanuts in the school. ***Please do not send any food that contains or may contain peanuts.***
Homework will only be a very small part of my weekly routine. When the bell rings at the end of the day, I would much prefer that you PLAY outside, that you TALK to your parents about things that you are pumped to be learning about, that you VOLUNTEER in your community, that you play on SPORTS teams, that you participate in CLUBS, that you get a good night's SLEEP etc etc etc. For the most part, I will make sure that there is enough time to complete assignments in class. BUT...if you are monkeying around and have not completed something, then it is expected that you finish it on your own time.
That being said, I expect you to be reading during the hours that you are not in school. Everyday. I strongly encourage you to power down all electronics 40 minutes before sleeping, and that you spend at least 20 minutes reading EVERYDAY. Trust me. You will be better for it!
There will also be biweekly spelling tests, and biweekly math assignments. I will not give class time to study spelling words, or to do the math assignment, but there will be time in the day when they are sitting idle and this can most certainly be accomplished then.
That being said...HOMEWORK will need to happen if you don't finish the assigned work in the time I give you at school (and it should almost always be enough time!)
All major assignments will be posted to Google Classroom where students (and their caregivers) can have access to them as long as you have internet access.
