At the end of 4th grade, students have the opportunity to choose a musical instrument to play in 5th grade. Before choosing an instrument and registering for an ensemble class, 4th graders will hear demonstrations on each instrument option, indicate their preferred instrument(s), have the opportunity to try playing some of the instruments themselves, and receive recommendations from the band and orchestra directors.
2026 Registration Schedule
Wednesday, April 15 - Instrument Demonstrations for Ridge
Thursday, April 16 - Instrument Demonstrations for Heights and Hill
Friday, April 17 - Instrument Demonstrations for Crest and View
Students currently in 4th grade will hear demonstrations by current 5th grade band and 6th grade orchestra members on the flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, horn, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, percussion, violin, viola, cello, and double bass during their music class. While listening to each performance, students will fill out an interest survey indicating their top 3 favorite instruments and whether or not they're interested in joining band or orchestra in 5th grade.
Did your student miss our visit, but might want to join band or orchestra? Check out these videos to see examples of all of the different instruments and their sounds!
Monday, April 20 - Try Instruments at Prairie Creek, 12:30–3:45pm
Wednesday, April 22 - Try Instruments at Prairie Creek, 4:15–6:15pm
Students have the opportunity to try playing their top three instrument choices before making a final decision. Families may sign their student up for a 45-minute time slot to come to Prairie Creek Intermediate on either day using the link below.
We also recommend visiting any of the local music stores in the area (such as West Music or Schultz Strings) to try instruments, especially if your student is having difficulty deciding which one to choose.
Thursday, April 30 - Instrument recommendations are delivered to students at school
Instrument Recommendations will be given to students to take home on the afternoon of Thursday, April 30th. Recommendations will include information about how to register for band or orchestra in addition to the specific instrument we'll recommend that your student play.
Please register by Friday, May 29th. We need to have all students who are interested in band or orchestra signed up by this date so we can create accurate class lists for the fall. Students can be registered for band or orchestra after this date, however, we cannot guarantee that they will be able to join the class immediately in the fall.
Tuesday, May 26 - SOAR to Creek Night
SOAR to Creek is scheduled for Tuesday, May 26th, from 5:00-7:00pm. This is a chance for you and your soon-to-be 5th grader to visit Prairie Creek, see the classrooms they could be in, and meet the band and orchestra teachers! We will be holding information sessions at 5:00, 5:30, and 6:00 in the instrumental room to talk to families about what 5th grade band and orchestra will look like and your next steps to getting registered. This is an optional event, but we would love to see you there if you're able to make it!
If you already know what instrument you want to play, find out what your next steps are on the ensemble page listed below. Be sure to click on the correct ensemble for your instrument!
