The purpose of the Caribbean Small-scale Fisheries & Aquaculture Forum is to provide a space for small-scale fishers to engage with CRFM, Member States representatives, other stakeholders, and partners on matters of key importance to the sector, surrounding the central themes of climate change, food security, and sustainable livelihoods.
The objectives of the forum are to:
Provide an situational overview of the status of the fisheries and aquaculture sector
Discuss the varying dimensions of the actual and potential contributions of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Sector to the 25 x 2025 + 5 vision of the Caribbean Community
Explore opportunities for mainstreaming gender and youth participation, in accordance with the directives of the CRFM Ministerial Council
Provide a space for small-scale fishers to engage with CRFM, Member States’ representatives, other stakeholders, and partners in matters of key importance to the sector, surrounding the central themes of climate change, food security, and sustainable livelihoods, including the potential future roles of fishers in harvesting Sargassum.
Explore opportunities for Sargassum value chain development, including guidelines for fishers for harvesting Sargassum for biostimulant production
Update partners and stakeholders on the implementation progress of the CNFO/CRFM Small-Scale Fisheries Action Plan aimed at contributing to the 25 X 2025 + 5 goal, and the challenges and opportunities with achieving its objectives of:
contributing to food security and food sovereignty;
strengthening/developing sustainable and resilient small-scale fisheries value chains;
mainstreaming gender along the fisheries value chain, and creating opportunities for the participation of women and youth; and
improving livelihood opportunities along the value chains by increasing access to financing and facilitating capacity building.
Small-scale fisheries and aquaculture in CARICOM/CRFM States make a valuable contribution to poverty alleviation, food and nutrition security, employment and income generation, economic growth, and social stability. They provide livelihood security for members of society, including women and youth.
The purpose of the Caribbean Small-scale Fisheries and Aquaculture Forum is to highlight the critical role of the sector in contributing to the region’s social, economic, environmental, and climate resilience.
This session will explore varying dimensions of the actual and potential contributions of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Sector to the 25 x 2025 + 5 vision of the Caribbean Community, with a special focus on mainstreaming gender and youth participation, in accordance with the directives of the CRFM Ministerial Council.
We will also showcase the advances made by the Caribbean Network of Fisherfolk Organisations towards the implementation of the CNFO/CRFM Small-Scale Fisheries Action Plan 2023-2025: Contributing to Achieving the 25% Reduction by 2025 in the Caribbean Community Food Import Bill. We will also engage on the critical actions needed to forge a more resolute direction on the way forward.
