World Music Drumming Syllabus/Programa High School WMDr

Treble Choir

Course Description:

Women's Choir: Grades 9 and 10. Prerequisite: 8th Grade Choir and/or Treble Choir previous year

Enrollment in this choir is by student choice. The Treble Choir will sing mainly SA (2-part) and SSA (3-part) literature in an unchanged voice choir setting. The choir sings at a minimum of five (5) performances throughout the school year. The goal is to further the understanding and knowledge of the voice, as well as build confidence in self through performance and practice.

Mixed Choir

Course Description:

Select Mixed Choir: Grades 9-12 Boys, 11-12 Girls. Prerequisite: 8th Grade Choir and/or Treble Choir

Enrollment in this choir is by singing the previous spring for the director. The Mixed Choir predominately sings SATB (4-part voices) in a mixed choir setting. The choir sings at a minimum of five (5) performances throughout the school year. The goal is to reach the highest level possible in performance and to continue to build the voice throughout solo and group ensemble work.

Swing Choir - Duly Noted

Course Description:

Select Mixed Choir: Grades 9-12. Prerequisite: AUDITION in previous spring semester, membership in another Crete Music Department

Enrollment in the swing choir is by audition. The Crete Swing Choir sings SATB (4-part voices) and SAB (3-part voices) in a mixed choir setting with choreography. The choir sings at a minimum of six (6) performances throughout the school year. The goal is to be ambassadors of Crete Public Schools, bringing a high vocal music expectation to share with audiences.

World Music Drumming (WMDr)

Course Description:

General Music Course: Grades 9-12. Prerequisite: None

Enrollment is open to all 9-12 students. Students enrolled in World Music Drumming will be learning proper drumming techniques on tubanos and discovering new music through learning and performing styles of drumming and dance from around the world. We will use traditional kinesthetic and aural/oral teaching techniques (teaching through modeling rather than speaking). Afro-Centric and Caribbean styles of drumming and dance are the main focus. The goal is to broaden our knowledge of the world and connect with others culturally.

8 Grade Choir

Course Description:

Mixed Choir: Grade 8. Prerequisite: Preferably 7 Grade Choir

Enrollment in this choir is by student choice. The 8 Grade Choir will sing mainly SAB (3-part mixed) literature in a mixed choir setting. The choir sings at a minimum of two (2) performances throughout the school year, as well as local care residencies. The goal is to broaden music literacy and ensemble work, finding the joy of creating music together. Curriculum also includes: musical unit ("Into the Woods" and "Annie" on a yearly alternating schedule, elements of music, and singing tests.

7 Grade Choir

Course Description:

Mixed Choir: Grade 7. Prerequisite: None

Enrollment in this choir is by student choice. The 7 Grade Choir will sing mainly two-part and some three-part treble (SSA and/or SAB; 3-part mixed) literature in a mixed choir setting. The choir sings at a minimum of two (2) performances during the school year, as well as at local care residencies. The choir works to create a positive environment to share song with others, building literacy and choral sound. Curriculum also includes: musical unit ("Into the Woods" and "Annie" on a yearly alternating schedule, elements of music, and singing tests.

6 Grade General Music/Choir

Course Description:

General Music Class: Grade 6. Enrollment: Required

All 6 Grade students are enrolled in general music/vocal choir class split up into two semesters. Half of the class will have Choir during the fall semester and the other half during the Spring semester. Each semester concludes with one (1) performance (December or May) that is required for all students. Curriculum includes: “Fiddler on the Roof” musical unit, choral performance, elements of music, reading and notating music, beginning partner singing, and singing tests.

5 Grade General Music/Choir

Course Description:

General Music Class: Grade 5. Enrollment: Required

All 5 Grade students are enrolled in general music/vocal choir class. The group performs in a one (1) performance during the school year, currently taking place in January. Curriculum includes: curriculum series Interactive Music, building music literacy, vocal health and singing, musical unit on "The Sound of Music" and much more!
