Student Support Services at Cresthaven Academy Charter School are a highly valued and important part of our school culture. We want to give all our scholars the opportunity to learn and work to their highest potential! Cresthaven Academy Charter School values the needs of our scholars and we strive to provide the best academic and support services for them.
IEP's and 504 Services
In our lower school, we offer in class support opportunities for our students with disabilities, as well as speech therapy services, occupational therapy services, and counseling. In our upper campus, we offer in class support, as well as pull out resource room services, speech & occupational therapy, as well as counseling. We have certified special education teachers who oversee the IEP programming for our students, as well as a social worker who serves both campuses. We work closely with the Union County Educational Services Commission when we need access to Child Study Team members (i.e. LDT/C, school psychologist, Board Certified Behavior Analyst, etc.), in order to hold IEP meetings and conduct evaluations in a timely manner. We follow all the rules and guidelines outlined in the New Jersey Special Education Administrative Code.

English Language Learners at Cresthaven Academy
At Cresthaven Academy we value our sense of community and our responsiveness to the needs of our scholars. We provide a robust English Language Learner (ELL) program here, and we currently have 138 scholars enrolled. Our scholars come to us at a variety of levels of English proficiency, and are provided with the appropriate level of instruction. At the lower campus, we have both pull out and push in ESL services, meaning that there are some students who are pulled out of class and go to a separate room with the ESL teacher, and the ESL teacher also pushes in to the classroom to support. At the upper campus, we use a push in model, where the ESL teacher goes directly into the general education class to support our English Language Learning Scholars.
When scholars enter our school (at every grade), they are asked to fill out a home language survey, and in this way, we can see what child might be a native English speaker, and those who may not be. We request information about what languages are spoken in the home, and what languages the scholars are comfortable with (i.e. When interacting with his/her parents or guardians, does the student understand or use a language other than English most of the time? When interacting with caregivers other than their parents or guardians, does the student use a language other than English more than half the time, etc.). Additionally, if a scholar transfers into our school, we reach out to their former school/district to retrieve information about their ELL status. This helps to give us a clear picture of who might need to be screened for ELL services. If it is determined that scholars need to be screened, then they are assessed using the WIDA, which is a trusted and comprehensive approach to supporting, teaching and assessing multilingual learners. These test scores can support decisions about whether a student is an English Language Learner and would benefit from English language support services. Parents do have the choice to opt out of these services, but generally they do not.
