Why are some people born as twins?

Introduction

Any person who knows a set of identical twins know that they are alike in many ways, and also very unique individuals. People who know twins or have them in their family may have some questions for or about them.

Fraternal and Identical Twins

Fraternal twins are very similar like as any other brothers or sisters who are not twins.

Fraternal twins can have a different hair color, eye color and the things they like to do for fun can be different and maybe even the people that they hang out with can be different.

Around one quarter of twins are identical twins. Identical twins look the same like a mirror of each other.

Statistics

People that are expecting a set of twins are most likely to give birth to them early. Just about 60 percent of twins are born early.

The chances of a person being a fraternal twin is low. But the chances of a person being an identical twin is even lower.

Identical twins have to be either both female or both male. Fraternal twins can be two boys, or two girls, or one boy and one girl.

Twins are the same in many ways and share a birthday. Identical twins not only share a birthday but share the same DNA.

DNA is a special code, also called genes, that make you unique. Nobody else in the world will have the same DNA as you unless you are an identical twin.

Twin Birth

Giving birth to twins is more complicated than just giving birth to one kid.

There is a chance that one half or both halves of the set of twins will be put into the hospital's special care.

The process of having twins is similar to having just one kid, except two babies have to be born which can increase the risk of problems happening during the births.

Also, many twins are born prematurely (early), which also increases the risk during birth.

In a hospital there’s a big chance of complications with being a identical twin or a fraternal twin.

Life As Twins

If you are a twin it can be great or maybe not great to have a person in your life that is the same age as you.

If you are an identical twin you might have a lot of fun confusing, tricking, and fooling people like your friends and family. Also it might not be so fun having people frequently confuse you with your twin.

Identical twins share a birthday and also share same DNA.

Fraternal twins don't share same DNA but share a birthday. You could say they are like brother and sister, or two brothers, or two sisters.

This picture shows twins in special hospital care after being born prematurely. With a twin birth, there is a greater chance of complications in the birth process, especially since many twins are born early.

Jason and Devin McCourty are a set of identical twins, who also play on the same football team the New England Patriots.
