Why is the Sun
So Important to the Earth?
Hey, do you want to learn about the cool sun? WAIT, I got a cool fact to share with you. The cool sun is actually not so COOL, it's extremely HOT! And it's extremely important.
Without our sun, the Earth would not exist, and all of the people, animals, and plants on Earth would not be able to survive.
The energy from the sun controls lots of important things on the Earth. For example, the sun makes our weather, controls the ocean waves, and gives plants the energy they need to survive. The sun gives us heat and light and holds our planet in place.
Keep on reading to find out many more HOT facts about why our sun is important.
The Earth rotates (spins) one time in 24 hours, so when you see the sun look like it is going down as it moves across the sky, really the Earth is just spinning away from the sun.
The rotation of the Earth is what causes night and day to happen. When your place on Earth is facing toward the sun, it is daytime. When your place on Earth is facing away from the sun, it is night. So without the sun, there would be no day or night!
Plants use photosynthesis, which turns light energy from the sun, combined with water and carbon dioxide, into food for the plants.
So without the light energy from the sun, plants could not grow. And if plants could grow, there would not be food for animals to eat, so animals could not exist. And without plants and animals, there would be no food for humans to eat, so humans could not exist.
All life on Earth is only possible because of the energy the sun gives us. The sun makes things happen on Earth. It makes plants grow, it lights up the Earth, it makes the wind move and controls the water cycle on earth.
Did you know that the sun even gives you vitamins?
One extra thing humans get from the sun is Vitamin D. So you should get about ten minutes of sun every day to get the Vitamin D that your body needs to stay healthy. Vitamin D helps keep your bones and teeth strong. It also helps your muscles and supports your immune system that helps your body fight sicknesses.
During winter time, people that live in New York and other northern states won’t be able to get as much Vitamin D because the angle of the sun shortens the amount of time there is daylight.
In the summertime, the opposite thing occurs, and there are more hours of daylight. But you do have to be careful because too much sun can also cause problems.
Did you know that about 41% of people in the United States do not get enough Vitamin D? That's crazy. If you don't get enough Vitamin D, your bones get weaker, your teeth get weaker, your muscles get weaker, and you are more likely to get sick because your body can't fight off diseases.
The easiest way to get Vitamin D is to go outside in the sunlight. But you can also get Vitamin D from the foods you eat, especially, milk, eggs, fish, and red meat.
If you are at home and you do not have light that can be super bad for you. WHY? Because there is a thing that is called ultraviolet light (UV light). Ultraviolet light kills germs such as bacteria, viruses, mold, and fungus.
It’s important to get the right amount of sun, about 10 to 30 minutes a day. If you stay inside for too long, that can be bad for you and your body because you don’t get enough Vitamin D. This especially happens in the winter time when there is only a little bit of sunshine. A lot of people spend too much time inside.
Did you know that an indoor environment contains dust that carries different bacteria which can cause asthma and allergic reactions? Did you know that as you wake up, you get sunlight in your body even if it is a cloudy day? The sunlight is still there.
Some people do not get enough sunlight in their day, especially if they work a night job or stay indoors watching TV or playing video games. To stay healthy, you need sunlight.
When you get time in your day go outside, do ANYTHING just get SUNLIGHT PLEASE YOU NEED IT!
What you can do OUTSIDE: play! If you have a dog you can play with it, play with any family members, play with a friend, play tag, hiding and seek. PLEASE GO OUTSIDE NOW!
The sun can feel nice on a summer day, but you WOULD NOT want to touch the sun. The sun is more than 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit. It can make you feel warm and cozy on Earth even though the sun is 93 million miles away from the Earth.
Did you know that the sun can help boost your mood? For example, sometimes in the fall and winter time you can feel sad or moody because there is not a lot of sunlight. That's why even though it may be freezing cold and snowy during the winter, it's still important to spend some time outdoors because the sunlight is good for your health and mood.
Thanks for reading my website. I hope you learned lots of cool --- I mean, HOT -- facts about how the sun is important to the Earth.
The sun helps the Earth in so many different ways. We couldn't survive without it. Here are some of the most important ways the sun helps the Earth: the sun gives Earth light energy and heat energy, the sun helps plants grow and survive, and the sun makes day and night happen on the Earth. Without the sun we would just have darkness and extreme cold.
This illustration shows Earth in space. The bright side is having day because it is facing toward the sun. The dark side is having night because it is facing away from the sun.
Plants get their food through a process called photosynthesis. Plants combine light energy from the sun, carbon dioxide from the air, and water in order to produce their own food.
The sun gives light energy to plants such as tree to help them grow.
The sun is an excellent source of Vitamin D. Humans need about 10-30 minutes of sunlight every day. Be careful not to get too much sun, because too much UV radiation can be harmful. So remember to wear sunscreen if you're staying outside.
Sunlight is helpful to kill germs. The ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun can kill germs such as bacteria, viruses, mold, and fungus.
Did you know that the sun can affect your mood? That is why people can get sad or gloomy in the winter time, because they don't get enough exposure to the sun. So even on cold winter days, it's important to get outside!
This diagram of the solar cycle shows how light energy from the sun can be converted to electrical energy, and then converted to chemical energy to be stored in batteries to use when it is needed.
