FUn in the Boarding house
We would like to take you on a tour of the boarding house and give you a flavour of what it might be like to board at Cranleigh Prep (School House.) We will be taking a zoom in to boarding rooms with interviews and tours!
What are the dorms like?
Girls:
The girls dormitory is spread out in different sections. One holds the Form 6 girls and one small corridor for the younger girls. The numbers vary from day today, from Monday and Tuesday being the quietest night’s, to Wednesdays and Thursdays nights being the busiest! We hoped the boarding house feels like home and it certainly does to the Full Time Borders! The Boarding House can hold up to 75 borders if, even more! The girls common room is used for so many things and is great fun when you’re playing on the arcade machine!
Boys:
The boys dormitory is upstairs and has 7 rooms spread out all around the floor. The common room is cozy with two sofas and an arcade machine donated kindly by the Dives. Almost all of the boys' borders are upper school but you will find middle school pupils scattered around.
Why do you enjoy boarding?
Fenella: I love Boarding because of all my friends that I have made along the way, I wouldn't know some of my best friends today, like Avie M, Stella S and Millie B. I love the quieter nights, just because I can be alone, and just generally relax.
Orlando: I started boarding because of all the positive comments from my friends. I instantly wanted to continue but after my trial I had to wait a year before I could start. But once I did I had the best time, my favourite things to do in boarding is dodgeball and werewolves. I highly recommend at least doing a trial and experiencing boarding. And hopefully you will join the boarding club.
Seb D:
I enjoy boarding because the dinners are very good and you can have as many portions as you would like.
Our top 5 activities that we have had so far!
1. Laser Quest, we had sooooo much fun!
2. The spray paint. I wasn’t there, but, from what I heard and saw it was FABULOUS!
3.The Boarders Talent Show. I came second!
4. We had a Boarders Bonfire night. I recommend the toffee apple.
5. When Mr. Perry comes (he’s the best, no offence other teacher’s!), we get full access to the art rooms!
This year, the Prep School decided to approach World Book Day with a twist. Rather than dressing up as a character, children were encouraged to dress up as an ambitious adjective so that the school would be awash with words! The aim was to be more environmentally friendly as many used items from their houses, rather than buying costumes. They could link their word to a character too if they wished. There was such a buzz around the school with children discussing their vocabulary, and we were so impressed by the imagination that was on show.
Throughout the day, classes took part in activities including; using braille, learning to use sign language and sessions creating weird and wonderful stories.
Take a look at the photos which capture the day!
On the 18th January 2025, everyone from Forms 3-6 had a big surprise… instead of matches they\we had an alternate sport morning.
We all sent in requests for the activities which were as follows: cross country, squash, table tennis, dance, pickleball, (the fastest growing sport in the world. You should try it!) and badminton, People were both excited and happy to try it. It was roughly the same amount of time (so don’t worry sporty people) as matches. I did table tennis and there were a huge number of children who tried it for the first time and really enjoyed it (including me!)
It was a great morning and nice to try something new.

On Friday 17th January, the whole school joined in with the running event of the year – House Cross Country. The event took place in our stunning school grounds where the runners took a step through the gate of nature into the wilderness.
Our first runners were the Lower school who came out buzzing with nerves and excitement ready to take on their 1km course. After a giant warm up, they took themselves to the start line. The horn blew as all the children flew off like rockets. All the runners did an amazing job and built up lots of house points for competing the course, but we would like to give a special mention to Marilyn M for finishing before anyone else. Even Mr Thomas struggled to keep up with her when setting the pace! A huge well done to Thomas D for being the first boy to finish.
The middle school was next, and they had to run a 2km course. Everyone was very impressed by the positivity that the children showed, even when they were tired and muddy. A special mention to Avie M for having the best smile, even though she slipped and was covered in mud from head to toe. Our strongest runners this year were Chloe B and Josh D who went on to compete at Wellington College Prep.
The Upper School followed, and they ran a tough 3km course. By this stage, it was even muddier which made it more difficult to run. They needed lots of determination to successfully finish the course. Well done to Rafi W and Hattie B who were our first runners across the line.

On 17th of January 2025 lots of children took part in the spectacular dance show. Every child who took part in the show, worked extremely hard to put on this amazing performance.
Behind the scenes, dancers rehearsed from September to make sure that their routines were as perfect as possible for the show. Not only that, but Miss Kimberley and her team worked endlessly to make sure that the costumes, the lighting and the set were beautiful, and if that wasn’t enough, they taught all the dancers their routines.
The dance show was a massive success, and Mr Newman and the rest of the audience were blown away by how professional it was.
I personally can’t wait for the next dance show. I know it will be incredible!

The Spelling Bee is a competitive event where children compete in heats in their classes. They had to choose a 1,2 or 3 point word and then spell it out loud, without writing it down. The strongest four from each house represent their house in the final.
At the end of World Book Day on Thursday 6th March, the final Spelling Bee took place in the Wyatt Hall in front of the whole school. The atmosphere was tense as pupils were called up one by one - all eyes on them. Mr Shires read a word, which got harder and harder as the competition went on and pupils tried their best to spell it correctly.
We were all so impressed with the competitors, and a special mention goes to Hugh Homan-Russel and Reuben Somers who won the Lower School and Upper School competition.
This is an Exciting challenge for a few CPS Rocket Scientists: where we will design, build, and launch our own rocket and compete against other pupils and schools!
This year at CPS we are entering the UKROC competition as Team ERUCA. We will undertake a thrilling opportunity to design, build, and launch our own CPS rocket. This challenge encourages us to combine creativity, science, and engineering skills in a competitive setting that will test our rockets ingenuity and problem-solving abilities!
What is the Model Rocket Challenge (UKROC)?
The challenge asks us to design a model rocket that must meet specific standards! It needs to carry a fragile payload (an egg) and achieve a set altitude (790 feet), while also making sure that the total flight duration aligns with precise time limits (41 to 44 seconds). The rules are updated annually to keep the competition fresh and push us to come up with new and inventive approaches to rocket design and construction. This encourages us to think outside the box, learn from previous designs, and continue to improve our skills year after year if we enter again. Our South regional competition will be in March.
We all have an interest in science and engineering (STEAM), and the UKROC challenge is the perfect opportunity to put our skills to the test.
Fingers crossed for the CPS UKROC launch!
Musical Magic
By Lily
What is house music?
House music is for all musical and non-musical people out there. No matter if there good or not, it’s always important to try something you’re not good at, or something that you’ve never actually tried. This is probably the most traditional and enjoyable competition you will ever experience in your life.
Are there any rules?
Firstly, you are not allowed to play two songs on the same instrument, and secondly, you are not allowed to do house music with other people, as This is an individual competition.
Are you allowed to play more than 1 instrument?
Yes, you are allowed to play more than instrument. Though you are not allowed to play the same song on both instruments.
Why do we do house music?
We do house music to listen to others’ music that they have been working on, but also to support other people. But mostly it’s about improving your musical ability so that you can preform your best, and to be better in music sessions.
Every year, CPS houses compete in house singing. This year, we were lucky to receive the band 'Take That,' as the theme. Each house has an individual song and a unity song- (a song which everyone sings, and often helps to find a potential winner!) The unity song this year is ‘Never forget’ which is about one of the band members leaving the famous group. Look below to see which house has will sing which song!
