Tia is a year 8 mainstream student, she is classed as a mid-level learner who will occasionally extend herself to reach the high order thinking level of tasks. She is a social student with a strong friendship group within this class. Tia is a willing and positive participating member of this lesson and will often contribute to class discussions. She has previously communicated some level of social anxiety when performing or presenting in front of her peers which we have been able to accommodate by adjusting tasks accordingly.
My name is Tia, I’m in year 8 and currently in Mrs De Corte's HPE class. This term we are learning about the benefits of physical activity. Last year I was disappointed when I realised HPE had theory lessons as I really love sport and being active but I’ve realised some of the stuff we learn in the theory lessons is really good and I still get to work with my friends and it's not all about sitting at a desk.
This term I found Mrs De Corte's lessons really interesting, we got to work in teams a lot and often got lots of choices about how we displayed our work and what topic we wanted to focus on more. In the first few lessons we were taught about all the different online websites and platforms we could use to help us with our work and display it, Mrs De Corte taught us how to use things like Google Blogger, Padlet, Popplet and PowerPoint. Mrs De Corte made an online mindmap with Popplet where we learnt about many benefits of physical activity, I had only ever done a mindmap on paper before so it was good to try it for ourselves and work with friends, I didn’t know that I could contribute to a mindmap at the same time as someone else so this made the activity so much faster and efficient.
When we looked at the information about the number of people who aren’t physically active and what that does to their lives I was quite shocked. It was also really great to hear about what benefits we get from being physically active, especially because I love playing sports so I know that I can get these benefits, I just wish that everyone knew about this too.
The project we took part in was to educate others on the benefits of being physically active, I really enjoyed putting together all my research and new knowledge to create a persuasive resource that could inform people about the information and statistics that I had learnt and also proposing ways they could improve peoples level of activity in their business. We got a lot of freedom around where we found the information we wanted to share and stored all our research in a Padlet which was easy to keep together and also share with other people in the class. I enjoyed making the interactive PowerPoint presentation to display all my research and I didn’t mind doing the audio recording, I’m not the most confident person in my class but doing an audio recording wasn’t too bad and helped me to explain my research and why it was important to include. Because we have learnt so much this term it was really useful to get feedback from my classmates in case I had forgotten to add something or if there was something I could improve on in the blog reflections.
