Masking, Distancing & Hand-washing

CPSC diligently follows

  • Universal masking indoors and outdoors including during recess and outdoor classes when in the red or high transmission category

  • Optional masking indoors and outdoors including during recess and outdoor classes when in the yellow/medium or green/low transmission category

  • Lunches limited to 20 minutes unmasked

  • Snacks are 5-7 minutes unmasked

  • Two hand sanitizing stations in every class and learning space to encourage frequent hand sanitizing

Outdoor Learning & Eating

Our Campuses have outdoor spaces equipped for Outdoor Classrooms and Lunch and Snack Eating Spaces for each class. We strive to eat outside at all times except inclement weather

During eating and drinking we:

  • keep lunch to 20 minutes and snack to 5-7 minutes

CPSC students love learning outside. We are creating more outdoor learning spaces and keeping each other safe. The combination of outdoor learning, rigorous academics and curriculum rooted in justice and equity builds wellbeing and improved mental health.

Learning Innovations and Field Trips

More Math, Science, Literacy and Social Outdoors

Field trips following all safety guidelines

Social Emotional Learning through Mindfulness & Restorative Practices

Social Justice and Equity Curriculum in our Project Work, Integrated Arts and Outdoor Learning

Our classes have taken to the city and beyond. We are taking walking field work and trip opportunities as well as bus service trips near and far! We integrate mindfulness & restorative practices proactively throughout the day. And we are increasing our resources and opportunities to better integrate real world outdoor learning with standards aligned and engaging academics and social emotional curriculum.

EC & Support Services

Our CPSC Exceptional Children's Team of Facilitators, Teachers, Therapists and Teaching assistants learned over the last two years how to lead small group direct and engaging instruction in our Campus Learning Centers to accelerate learning for our EC students. It was a huge success as our EC lead the way with safety, learning innovations and on campus learning. This year they will continue working with every family to adapt and design goals and instruction to accelerate every learner.

Preparing Our Buildings

Each Campus building is outfitted with several layers of protection:

  • Improved Air Quality:

    • Upgraded filtration (MERV-13 filters)

    • Proper ventilation (minimum 5 air changes per hour, outdoor air via HVAC machines),

    • air purification in our learning spaces

    • ionization (ionizers in all spaces)

  • Touchless sinks, toilets, and bottle fillers

  • Regular cleaning, and disinfecting of commonly used indoor spaces with EPA approved cleansers

COVID-19 Policies & Practices: Symptoms, Testing, Tracing, and Communication

Our CPSC Covid19 Policies and Practices are updated regularly based upon guidance from our local and state science, education and public health partners. With all known infections and potential close contacts we immediately partner with you and your child's class community. Our process aims to build confidence, confidentiality and compassion.

Covid Rapid Testing & Weekly Covid PCR Screening Testing

CPSC provides testing in two critical ways as layers of protection:

  • Antigen Rapid Covid Testing to any student or staff who requests testing

  • Weekly Covid PCR Screening Testing approved by any student and staff

Our partnership with the NC Dept. of Child and Family Wellbeing to provide Covid19 antigen rapid tests for all staff and students showing symptoms. We also have partnered with Duke University and the ABC Science Collaborative to receive the most updated Covid research and practices for our students and staff.

Vaccines for Staff, Students, Families and our Community

CPSC is partnering with the Durham County Department of Public Health to advertise and share the latest local clinics for our students and families. Currently, the majority (>95%) of our staff are vaccinated.

Public Health & Pediatric Science Partnerships

Our Duke & UNC scientists, doctors and researchers at the ABC Science Collaborative guided all of NC Public Schools' safe return to in person learning. Their research was championed by the CDC, NC Board of Education and our CPSC School Board. Currently they are assisting us along with the NC Dept. of Child and family Wellbeing to better respond to the growing Mental Health Crisis for our children. They, along with the Durham County Department of Public Health are our most trusted local partners.
