How Students Write

Developing Sentences:

• Students create sentences about a complete idea.

• Nouns, pronouns, verbs, subject/verb agreement, adjectives, adverbs are included.

• Capitalization, punctuation, correct spelling is reinforced.

Developing Paragraphs:

• Paragraphs include a topic, supporting detail sentences, and a closing.

Grammar and Mechanics

Revising:  CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.2.5 

• Include nouns and pronouns, subject/verb agreement, adjectives, adverbs.

• Add sequence or time order words.

• Check for different sentence beginnings.

• Use vivid higher level vocabulary.

Editing: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.2.5

• Use periods, questions marks, exclamation points, commas, and quotations.

• Use capitals for sentence beginnings, the word “I,” names of people and places. 

• Check for correct spelling. 

Types of Writing

Constructed Responses: 

• Students answer questions by citing evidence using the text.

• The children explain their ideas using extra details.

• Students create a sequenced retelling of events by describing actions, thoughts, and feelings.

• Students write to introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop informative sentences, and provide a concluding statement. 

Opinion Pieces:   CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.2.1

• Students introduce a topic or book, state an opinion, supply reasons to support their opinion, and provide a concluding statement.
