After collecting our data from students, our perception towards our former hypothesis changed. Initially the Creative Design 1 classroom had showed that over time there was an increase of engagement. Along with that, the Freshman Exploratory rotations showed how the student's perception of complexity increased their interest and willingness to complete assignments. Our data helped to push these thoughts to a conclusion that the students dedication to an assignment correlates with their perceived connection and challenge level. A stronger connection or greater challenge increases their engagement and commitment to the task.
Our exploration of this question is by no means over. We will continue to push ourselves as teaching assistants to fully understand and support the students in our classes.
Overall, the process of being a teacher's assistant has been an invaluable one. Getting the opportunity to see the inner workings of a teaching environment has deepened our appreciation for all that teachers do. We were able to see how much educators tailor curriculum and reformat that class to better support students. Constantly analyzing and reflecting on each and every lesson enabled us to see patterns in each and every student.
A main takeaway from the Creative Design 1 class was seeing the students grow over time. Over time in the class I was able to make connections with the students. It was extremely interesting to help them through their creative process and see how much they grew as designers within such a small amount of time. I will encourage them to keep taking courses in the RSTA programs and cannot wait to see where they go from here.
Particularly in freshman exploratory where rotating groups of students every few weeks unveiled the complexities of teaching. Handling diverse behaviors and resolving various issues that arise with a different group of students each week has provided valuable insights into the intricacies of the teaching role.
