Artful Thinking and Social Emotional Learning
Gaining Perspective
Art elicits feelings and emotions and easily lends itself to Social Emotional Learning. The simple act of interpreting an artist's piece of work is a natural way to see someones else's perspective. Though this process of artful thinking students gain appreciation and empathy by exploring many viewpoints.
Art and Emotional Well being
Participation in the arts has a positive and long-lasting effect on children’s social and emotional abilities. Together, we can help our children to become creative, thoughtful and socially and emotionally adept individuals by providing artistic opportunities for self-expression.
Mindfulness in Art Class
First and second graders start each class repeating positive statements. These statements along with our hand gestures help get our brains thinking and ready for art. Positive affirmations also help students to gain confidence.
How to encourage artistic thinking
Provide self-serve supplies that your child can use independently such as; recycle items, tape, glue, scissors, magazines for cutting, drawing and painting materials.
Allow your child to express themselves freely. Focus on the process not the end result.
Ask open-ended questions about your child’s artwork to encourage discussion.
Enjoy the arts right here in CT. Check out the free days for families at the Wadsworth Antheneum, The New Britain Museum of American Art or the David Hayes Sculpture Fields right here in Coventry.
