HIGH SCHOOL FINE ARTS PROGRAM OF STUDIES:
Art Sequence Requirements: 5-Credit Sequence = Studio in Art plus four additional credits from the following list:
Studio Art 1 Credit
Gr. 9-12
This course is the first step in a four-year course of Study in Art. It is the prerequisite to our Drawing and Painting courses. It will satisfy the graduation requirement of one year in Art. This course offers the student the opportunity to explore the various studio techniques and media with a focus on the Elements of Art and Principles of Design, and the study of Optical Color Effects. The latter portion of this course allows the student a choice of research of media to solve assigned studio explorations.
Drawing and Painting 1 Credit
Gr. 10-12
This program offers the student foundational studies in drawing and introduction to painting in various media. Students will be introduced to various artistic interpretations of Art. Students learn drawing techniques, Chiaroscuro, Pen and Ink Techniques, and Chalks. Painting includes research into Color theory, painting media, and art movements. Students are required to research an artist and his or her style, complete an artistic interpretation final.
Prerequisite: Studio Art
Advanced Drawing and Painting 1 Credit
Gr. 11-12
This program offers students an option to further their skills in drawing and painting. The students will learn more in depth techniques in drawing and painting. This class will produce work that can be used in a portfolio for college admission. Students will study various artists and their techniques to broaden their art knowledge and advance their skills. This class will research art movements and how they affected society. After researching an art movement the students will complete art works in the styles of the artists of that time period.
Prerequisite: Drawing and Painting
Studio in Art Portfolio 1 Credit
Gr. 12
This course is open to a junior or senior who has completed at least four Art courses. The student should have departmental recommendation of their work to be considered for the course. All students will need to develop a portfolio for review towards entrance to art schools or colleges and or scholarship. Students will research art programs of prospective schools for portfolio development, schools that offer internships for careers after graduation. Portfolio preparation includes four quarter review and presentation of their portfolio at Art Portfolio Fairs.
Prerequisite: Advanced Drawing & Painting
Ceramics ½ Credit
Gr. 10-12
This course is designed to teach students the techniques of ceramics. Students will be taught how to mold, model and manipulate clay to produce many varied art pieces. The students will be taught the differences between hand-built, slab, coil and wheel clay pieces. Students will use different glazes and glazing techniques and the kiln to make a finished product. Students will make varied projects including sushi dishes, pitchers and figures.
Prerequisite: for 9th and 10th Graders: Studio Art
Advanced Ceramics ½ Credit
Gr. 10-12
Advanced Ceramics is a studio course designed to expand upon the skills and ideas gained in Ceramics. This half-year art course will teach advanced techniques in ceramics. The students will use prior learned and new techniques to mold, model and manipulate clay to produce final art pieces. Students will explore a variety of ceramic techniques including refining hand building skills and wheel throwing skills dealing with more complex and conceptual forms. The use of glaze and under glazes will be used in new ways to beautify their final art works. Students will begin to develop their personal style in ceramics.
Prerequisite: Ceramics
Photography ½ Credit
Gr. 10-12
This course is intended to further the student’s knowledge of digital photography and digital imaging. This course covers the history of 35mm photography, picture taking, scanning and digital imaging. The students will be introduced to various photographic styles and observe the differences between 35mm photography and digital photography. The students will be learning to manipulate photographs using the computer program Adobe Photoshop CS2.
Prerequisite: for 9th and 10th Graders: Studio Art
Sculpture ½ Credit
Gr. 10-12
The program offers the student an outlet for self-expression in three-dimensional design in a variety of media. It is designed to offer both aesthetic and technical experiences so that the student will be able to understand, appreciate, and express himself/herself with dexterity and sensitivity.
Prerequisite: for 9th and 10th Graders: Studio Art
Advanced Sculpture ½ Credit
Gr. 10-12
The following topics will be covered, practiced, and created throughout the school year. This half year art course will teach techniques in advanced sculpture. The students will be taught how to mold, model and manipulate clay to produce final art pieces. The students will be taught the differences between classical and modern sculpture, ranging from ancient techniques to present day innovations. Students will be taught how to create busts, statuettes as well as modern streamline sculptures. Students will also be introduced to plaster casting. These castings can be used to mass produce objects such as toys, household items, etc.
Prerequisite: Sculpture
Studio in Crafts ½ Credit
Gr. 10-12
This course will explore several cultural and historical areas in the crafts field. This may include basketry, stain glass, mosaics, batik, bookbinding, soft metal, glass jewelry, and hand built clay crafts. This course will concentrate on craft skills rather than fine art skills. Students will research a cultural craft and construct this craft as an end term project.
Prerequisite: for 9th and 10th Graders: Studio Art
