Course Objective: This course is designed to prepare students for the transition from 8th Grade Math to Algebra 1. They will be required to reason mathematically and to think critically, to represent mathematics in multiple ways, as well as actively engage in a curriculum that provides them with a clear path to higher level mathematics.
Course Description: The 8th Grade Mathematics curriculum is a mixture of 7th grade, 8th grade, and Algebra 1 concepts designed to bridge the gap between 8th grade Math and Algebra 1. The curriculum is twelve units. The following is a breakdown of the concepts that will be covered this year.
Units of Study
1st 9 - weeks
● Unit 1: Number Sense- Rational/Irrational Numbers, decimals, fractions.
● Unit 2: Exponents- Operations with exponents, fractions, and negative exponents.
● Unit 3: Scientific Notation- Operations with scientific notation with conversions
2nd 9 - weeks
● Unit 4: Algebra- One and two step equations, multi-step equations, and graphing
● Unit 5: Angles- Classifying angles and their relationships
● Unit 6: Slope- slope with graphing and standard to slope intercept form
3rd 9 - weeks
● Unit 7: Functions- Linear and nonlinear, proportional relationships, and graphing
● Unit 8: Pythagorean Theorem- Graphing the theorem and its converse
● Unit 9: Volume- Calculate cylinders, cones, and spheres.
4th 9 - weeks
● Unit 10: Transformations- Reflection, rotation, translation, and dilation.
● Unit 11: Systems- Using substitution, elimination, and graphing.
● Unit 12: Data- Scatterplots, two-way tables, and line of best fit
Course Structure:
Assessments: There will be periodic assessments throughout the units and at the end of each unit. Students will be assessed through tests, quizzes, and projects.
Homework: Homework will be given on Monday’s and is due each Friday. All homework is online. Students are responsible for completing all assignments on their own time. Success in this class depends upon completion of all assignments.
Extra Support:
❖ There is a math teacher in the Target Lab every morning starting at 7:30 am for additional help.
❖ If a student scores poorly or is unhappy with an assessment grade, the assessment can be retaken. Unit Test retakes must be completed within 1 week of the test being returned to the student. Students must complete corrections on assignments before retaking any test.
❖ Projects and homework assignments cannot be redone.
