Hello Everyone!
Art Lab H2O will be interactive and and a NEW way for us to share. You will be able to see our galleries in real time as we publish our work directly to our website. You will be able to keep track of events by reviewing our newsletter archive and former posts in Google Classroom here too. Please consider our former website a 20+ year archive of our amazing collaboration and good work and our NEW site a working journal that looks toward the future.
One will be silver, the other will be gold...
Check out a snapshot of our fun over the years...

K-8 Student Work!
MNI Wiconi!
We will be using these artworks as our primary sources for our upcoming Water(S) Is Life mural project to LAUNCH our NEW 4D Multi-arts space (Literary Salon). See below for more information!
WE ARE WATER PROTECTORS is the story that inspired our art---written by Carole Lindstrom and illustrated by Michaela Goade. Ms. Lindstrom and Ms. Goade are Indigenous women who share their sacred roles as the first Water Protectors of Turtle Island with all of us.
Ms. Goade's artwork is stunning...
Design Thinking: A Study of Architecture inspired by Jeanne Gang and other design thinkers!

OUR 2nd floor Mural PROJECT!
Be Water...
This artwork is a student-created design rooted in Environmental justice and hopeful visions of change.
Our Water Protector image is almost fininshed and her hair will become a double-sided image of the chicago River that is featured on our windows and will continue throughout the 2nd floor walls...Students k-8 will have the opportunity to create with us! What fun!
We will be kicking off the school year with this important story about making choices. Luke shares his story of why he has chosen to act green. Maybe you will too?
Greta Thunberg is our inspiration for our work for environmental and climate justice this year! We will look at her stand against global warming through a variety of age-appropriate texts. Her pursuit of knowledge, celebration of challenges and willingness to stand up for her convictions are powerful examples to all of us.

ART LAB Assessment Philosophy & Process
Performance-based assessments occur throughout our ART LAB experience. Students create artworks non-stop and we often have pop-up galleries, group critiques (Feldman's 4 Methods) and all-school, formal exhibits.
Progress-monitoring is constant. I am always working with students to meet their needs and evaluate any supports (or space) that they need. Student portfolios guide this process and add support to our progress-monitoring.
Students create 3-2-1 THINK SHEETS at key moments in each project. Think sheets can be both oral and written---in the form of 3-2-1 Think Sheets.
(They are those student-created triangles, that look like candy corn, that you often see in the ART LAB or in student portfolios.)
I ask students to share their thinking:
3 "things" you've learned in this project...
2 "things" you found interesting in our experience...
1 question you still have about our learning...
Vocabulary: Share all you have learned in our study...
This snapshot is important to me. I learn what students are thinking and what is important to them in their learning. Rather than testing kids on what I think they should know, these vignettes tell me what they found meaningful.
I use these 3-2-1 THINK SHEETS to plan further lessons and to hear student voice. I love learning the questions students have---after our study is done or as we create together. I am always surprised:)!

There isn't ONE CORRECT ANSWER in art. Art is about creating your own answer. That is resilient work. It needs support and a safe space to take risks and make mistakes. It is my intention to make ART LAB a safe space for students to create and grow.
