Lorraine Hansberry is one of the most prolific playwright in American History. She wrote the acclaimed play A Raisin in the Sun, and it was inspired by Langston Hughe’s poem Harlem. Langston Hughes asked the question “What Happens to a Dream Deferred”. This question inspired Lorraine Hansberry to write her play about a Black Family on the South Side of Chicago dealing with deferred dreams and finding hope in the midst.
For this project, students will read Harlem and then bring in text that you feel is connected to you and to the poem. During the first day we will workshop your text (it can be a monologue, rap or song lyrics, spoken word, photography, whatever speaks to you) and the second day you will perform it.

The second day, we will showcase the films via zoom and give students the opportunity to explain their motivations and receive feedback. We will give awards at the end of the screening.
