QUARTER 1:
7th and 8th grade students learned some basic skills on Modern Band instruments including acoustic guitar, electric bass, and drums. Students worked on forming correct chord hand positions and basic strumming on the guitar and finger-picking on the electric bass. They also learned the basic back beat on the drums, which is the foundation for most pop and rock songs.
QUARTER 2:
7th and 8th grade students continued their Modern Band studies by choosing a song and preparing it for performance at Stone's first annual Battle of the Bands concert. Videos of their Battle of the Bands performances can be found HERE.
For the final project of our bucket drumming unit, students picked a song of their choice to learn and perform in an informal "informance" during music class. Some students utilized our subscription to BucketDrumming.net to find their song, others chose a song they enjoy and created their own bucket drumming patterns. It's exciting seeing the students transferring their skills into new material!
8th graders have been working on the xylophones and classroom percussion instruments, learning different patterns and parts to "Sail" by Awolnation and "Somebody That I Used to Know" by Gotye. We hope to splice recordings together to create a music video of them playing the arrangements that they create.
We’ve developed a new program with Mechelle Moe from Raven Theatre to explore the idea of a Time Capsule for the students as their time at Stone comes to an end. This is a fun reflective collage, capturing elements of home life, school life, or a day in the life of the Stone 8th grader. Students will collaborate to create scripts and skits based on their own personal experiences.
