The English Department curriculum challenges students to develop their reading, writing, speaking, listening, and critical thinking skills through deep engagement with diverse texts. We continually seek ways for students to engage with Chicago’s vibrant literary and theatrical communities; some of our past partnerships have included the Goodman, Steppenwolf, and Shakespeare theaters, as well as Young Chicago Authors, the Poetry Foundation, and the Newberry Library. From our award-winning Slam Poetry Team to our nationally competitive Debate Team, students will also find a wide range of extracurriculars offering further opportunities to write, publish, perform, or debate. In helping students to become confident readers of both the written word and the world around them, we endeavor to prepare them for lives as effective citizens and leaders in their communities.
