Indigenous People's Day
Indigenous People's Day
Indigenous People's Day was Monday, October 12th. The name of this holiday was recently changed, so we spent some time in class discussing who Christopher Columbus was and why the name has since been changed to Indigenous People's Day.
We first read the book Encounter by Jane Yolen. It is a story told from the perspective of a Taino boy who meets Columbus. We studied the difference in perspectives and learned some of the true history of what happened. Then, we provided evidence to support supporting either Columbus Day or Indigenous People's Day as we formed our own opinions through analyzing different sources.
