Social Work with Ms. T

Welcome to Ms. T's Cozy Corner!

To all of my students and families, this website was created for YOU. This page will be a safe space for learning and exploring as we transition back into the classroom for the 2021-2022 school year. I created this platform to organize information for you, to stay connected to you, and to offer tools for learning and growth so both resources and myself are widely available across multiple platforms.

To parents & guardians,

I hope that each of you are safe, well, and finding ways to manage during this challenging time. We began the 2020-2021 school year remotely amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and have been trying to make our way back to normalcy since. Unfortunately, we are still facing these public health challenges, but this year, we are able to come together in the same physical space with the proper pre-cautions.

If we take a look at the visual to the left, you will see Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Maslow's widely accepted theory suggests that in order to achieve "self-actualization", or a fully fulfilled potential, all other needs below must be met first. The foundation of the hierarchy starts with physiological needs which encompass the basics of food, shelter, water, and sleep. Next, we see safety needs which look like having a job, consistent income, health, and access to medical treatment. After safety is ensured comes love and belonging where humans have a need to love, be loved, and create and maintain meaningful relationships. The next level of need is esteem which we know looks like confidence, respect, and love for oneself across environments. Finally, at the top of the hierarchy, we see self-actualization, which is a term used to describe complete fulfillment and acceptance. Although todays theorists believe there is some overlap between levels, the general idea is that before a person can achieve one section, they have to complete the one below it. My job as your child's social worker is to help see which needs have to be met next. Does your family have access to to food, water, and shelter? Are these resources low, can I help allocate more? Before I dive into social emotional learning, and problem-solving initiatives with your child, we have to make sure they feel safe, supported, and have access to critical resources during this time. We are in the middle of a pandemic. IT IS OKAY NOT TO BE OKAY. Please let me know how I can help you if you need assistance in finding organizations or groups for the following: food/clothing donations, financial assistance in rent/utility payments, help applying for unemployment benefits, shelter options, community mental health support, etc. Do not hesitate to reach out to me for any reason.

We are in this together.

Sincerely,

Ms. T
