FACIAL EXPRESSION IS VERY, VERY, VERY IMPORTANT. The wrong facial expression, even a blank expression creates confusion. Show what you mean that is appropriate for the situation. Facial expression is part of ASL.
If your child is not facing you, please tap him/her on their shoulder to get their attention AND wait for them to look at you before talking/signing to him/her. You can also tap the table for vibration, flick the lights on and off or wave in their line of vision.
Do not assume they understand you, ask him/her what you just told them. We are famous for head nods whether we understand you or not. Tell-Tale signs are blank facial expressions or inappropriate responses.
Eye noise is just like sound noises that interfere with what you are trying to listen to. Our eyes are our ears, it is extra sensitives. Any slight movement will catch our attention and take away from what we are trying to focus on. So, TV, a flick of a hand, and extra bodies in the room are all distractions.
