The Lane Tech Writing Center is staffed by nearly 60 diverse peer tutors. We have representation across grade levels, across concentrations, and with various strengths—if you're looking for a tutor who is well-versed in rhetorical analysis, we've got you covered. A tutor who knows how to help out with a play? We've got you covered too. Even if you're writing in Hungarian, there's a tutor for you.
All of our peer tutors go through a yearlong elective class, Honors Writing Instructors, as part of the process to become a tutor. Students are recommended for the class by English teachers and other tutors, studying Writing Center theory and pedagogy in order to craft strategies to best assist our writers. Some tutors choose to take the class for a second year, serving as mentors for first-year students and taking a larger role in the administration of the Center.
In the Center, we encourage each of our tutors to think critically about tutoring practice and investigate how the Center does its work. Every year, tutors have the opportunity to present at a genuine academic conference, hosted by SSWCA (the Secondary School Writing Center Association). In the past, we've had tutors present on training styles, on how posture impacts appointments, on how we can de-emphasize digital connectivity in the Center. It's a wonderful opportunity for our tutors—and of course, it's tons of fun.
Drop by Room 233 and we'll be happy to talk to you—that's what we're all about.
