Resources for Immigrant Students and Families
Please Refer to the following resources as needed. If you have questions or concerns, please contact the school's Sanctuary Team.
1: Know Your Rights: Slides
This presentation has been created by the LPHS Sanctuary Team. I have shown these to my students. Dr. Steinmiller shared these in the update sent out just a few minutes ago-- but I felt it important to point them out more directly. I encourage those willing to show these slides to students and to post on your google classrooms. We are working on making these in multiple languages, which we will link into the slides when available.
2: "Red Cards"
"Red Cards" are cards with Constitutional rights and statements that can/should be read out loud when encountering immigration officials. I am attaching PDFs of these, I have a lot of them for Spanish speakers printed in 106 (feel free to grab a couple), but the attached PDFs are in various languages (more can be found on the website). This is a great resource to leave in shared spaces where students can take one without having to ask or identify the need for one. These are from the Immigrant Legal Resource Center.
3: Plyler v. Doe Information
Plyler v Doe confirms the right to public education for all students regardless of student/family immigration status.
4: Know Your Rights (ACLU)
Link here, which answers a lot of questions that students and community members may have.
5: City Resources
Here are some documents compiled by the city, updated this week.
6: CPS Resources
CPS has been continuously updating their "new administration" resources at this link.
CPS and DEPARTMENT MISSION
The InS department at LP follows the CPS mission for social science education in that we work to "foster learning experiences that build the skills, knowledge, and habits necessary for students to effectively contribute to, and participate in, the social, political, and economic life of their communities and world."
CPS and DEPARTMENT VISION
The department supports the district's social science and civics vision of "creating anti-racist classrooms where inquiry drives learning". Our department vision is to provide anti-racist and multicultural curricula that celebrates our student populations' diversity, experiences, and unique perspectives that contribute to learning.
