English courses are a significant part of your studies at Kenwood Academy. Students must take four core English classes in order to graduate. Our course offerings include Advanced Placement and Dual Credit classes as well as a series of electives which fulfill graduation requirements.
The Kenwood Academy English Department aims to engage our students in a comprehensive study of literature and language that will foster their development into active readers, confident writers, and critical thinkers capable of succeeding in endeavors which require creative and effective communication.
Teachers of English at Kenwood Academy are responsible for implementing a well-rounded program of study which promotes an appreciation of the language arts, reinforcing its value in our lives as a means of expressing the human experience. In addition to building their capacities in reading, writing, speaking, and thinking, our students are challenged to examine ideas that offer greater insight into themselves and the world around them. In order to achieve these goals, the Kenwood Academy English Department employs the most effective instructional strategies and exposes students to a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts. We also review existing curriculum so that teaching techniques and materials do not become static and continue to meet our students’ needs in an ever-changing world. In addition to our core course offerings, students have an opportunity to broaden their experiences by taking elective courses, engaging in the fine and dramatic arts, and participating in literary experiences outside the classroom.
