In the library world, we like to say that there is a reader for every book, but not every book might be right for every reader. My hope is that this controversy scale gives parents, librarians, and educators a clear, balanced way to anticipate potential concerns while recognizing the educational and social value of children’s books.
Here is how the Controversy scale was created:
Subject Matter: Does it touch on real-world social, political, or moral issues?
Content Sensitivity: Are there instances of violence, language, or mature themes?
Representation & Context: Is the book’s message framed positively or open to misinterpretation? What tropes are used?
Reader Age & Maturity: How might the intended audience process these themes? What additional information might they need?
Reference Resources: I referenced Common Sense Media ratings and parent reviews, as well as Social Justice Books reviews when available.
