If you have completed classroom driver education and are not yet 18 years old, you qualify to apply for a permit and enroll in behind-the-wheel driver education.
If you are from Roosevelt, Von Steuben, Disney II, or Rickover your classroom instructor will administer the State of Illinois permit exam and provide all the details for you to get your permit and enroll in our program.
If you do not attend one of the above mentioned schools, you will need to visit our center to apply for a permit and enroll in our driving program. To do this, you should stop by our center any Saturday during the regular school year between the hours of 7am and 11am. Please note we are not open Saturdays during the summer or during thanksgiving, winter, or spring breaks.
When you come in to enroll, please bring the following:
Proof of having passed classroom driver ed (a report card or transcript is fine)
A check or money order for exactly $20 payable to "Illinois Secretary of State" (cash or cards are not accepted)
A parent or guardian to sign your permit application
There is a one-time $50 lab fee which allows us to maintain and fuel the vehicles you will be driving. The fee must be paid online using this link: https://magic.collectorsolutions.com/magic-ui/Login/chicago-public-schools--cps Please make sure to select Roosevelt as your lab site when making the payment. Please screenshot the confirmation page showing you paid and either email the screenshot to me, mtkroski@cps.edu, or save it on your phone to show your instructor.

Question: Do I need to take behind-the-wheel driver education?
answer: Behind-the-wheel driver education is not a requirement to graduate, you only need classroom. Taking behind-the-wheel will allow you to get your license before you turn 18, plus it will make you a better driver.
Question: Do I need to bring a car?
answer: No, we supply the vehicles
Question: Can friends or family ride with me during the lesson?
answer: No, insurance regulations only permit students enrolled in the program to drive or ride in the driver education vehicles. Parents are welcome to escort their child to the lesson but they will need to either return after the lesson to pickup their student up or wait in the parking lot for their return.
Question: What kind of car will I be driving for my lessons?
answer: Most of our fleet is made up of the Ford Focus. We also have a very nice Ford Edge which you may drive if your're lucky.
Question: What should I bring to my lessons?
answer: Your permit and shoes that are NOT Crocs, Slides, Flip-flops, or Sandals. If you wear glasses or contact lenses please wear them when driving.
Question: Who will I be driving with?
answer: You will be driving with one or two other students and a CPS teacher. The other students can be from any of the schools we serve; Roosevelt, Disney II, Rickover, Schurz, or Von Steuben. Our teaches are from several area CPS schools.
Question: Who will my instructor be?
answer: Our instructors are state-certified, regular CPS teachers who have undergone additional training in safety and driver education. Most have many years of experience in helping students become safe drivers.
Question: How do I make up a missed lesson?
answer: See the "Reschedule a Lesson" section above or stop by our center
