'Project on Target' Literacy Goals
Your child will be learning to read this year and you can help!
Recommended Daily Activities with your child:
Read together every night
Practice letter names and sounds
Read high frequency words (See Below)
Write first and last name in title case (only first letter is capitalized)
Activities for practicing Letter Name, Letter Sound or High Frequency Words are:
Make flashcards on index cards and have your child practice reading them over and over.
Play “Go Fish” on index cards (write each word/letter on two cards).
Word Searches/High Frequency Word Scavenger Hunt: Find high frequency words on food boxes or other available print material (magazines, grocery shopping, street signs, etc.)
Letter Magnets: Have your child use letter magnets to spell the word.
Memory game: Make duplicates of letters or high frequency word cards and play the memory game.
Bingo: Make 5 x 5 grids and put high frequency words in the squares. Call out a high frequency word and have your child find the word on his/her Bingo board; play the same rules as Bingo.
Write high frequency words with glitter glue
Write high frequency words with “Playdoh”
Write high frequency words with shaving cream
Put craft sand on a paper plate. Have your child practice tracing high frequency words in the sand.
Jump, hop, clap, or tap out the letters of the high frequency word (t-h-e “the”).
We will be practicing the Dolch High Frequency Words list all year. Knowing this list of words makes reading much easier, because your child can then focus their attention on the remaining unknown words in a text. Because the list is long, we will be using rainbow word lists to help motivate your child to practice. Each list contains a color. As your child masters one list they can move on to the next color. We will assess student knowledge of the words from their leveled list and provide feedback of which words to keep practicing at home.
