Exploring Our Body / From Head to Toe
Objective: Students will identify and label the different parts of the body.
Assessment: Students will complete a worksheet where they label the body parts.
Key Points: Introduce vocabulary related to body parts (head, shoulders, knees, toes, etc.) through a song or rhyme.
Standard Addressed: Know the spelling-sound correspondences for common consonant digraphs.
Objective: Students will understand the function of different body parts.
Assessment: Students will participate in a class discussion and share their understanding of the functions of various body parts.
Key Points: Use visual aids and real-life examples to explain the function of body parts (e.g., eyes for seeing, ears for hearing, etc.).
Standard Addressed: Use materials to design a solution to a human problem by mimicking how plants and/or animals use their external parts to help them survive, grow, and meet their needs.
Objective: Students will play Simon Says games to reinforce body parts vocabulary and listening skills.
Assessment: Students will actively participate in the Simon Says games and correctly identify and touch the body parts mentioned.
Key Points: Explain the rules of Simon Says and provide clear directions for the game. Use a variety of body part commands to challenge students' listening skills.
Standard Addressed: - Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions.
Objective: Students will recognize and read words related to body parts using phonics.
Assessment: Students will complete a phonics worksheet where they match body part words to corresponding pictures.
Key Points: Teach phonics rules and patterns related to body part words (e.g., /h/ sound for head, /f/ sound for foot). Practice blending and segmenting sounds in body part words.
Standard Addressed: Decode regularly spelled one-syllable words.
Objective: Students will create a body parts collage using various materials.
Assessment: Students will present their collages and describe the materials they used to represent different body parts.
Key Points: Provide a variety of art materials (e.g., construction paper, cotton balls, pipe cleaners) for students to represent different body parts. Encourage creativity and use of descriptive language during the presentation.
Standard Addressed: Generate artwork using basic art materials.
Objective: Students will review and reinforce their understanding of body parts through a review game.
Assessment: Students will actively participate in the review game and correctly identify body parts when prompted.
Key Points: Play a review game (e.g., Body Part Bingo, Flashcard Race) where students have to identify body parts based on descriptions or visual cues.
Standard Addressed: Distinguish between information provided by pictures or other illustrations and information provided by the words in a text.
We can play different games, and as suggested I wanna introduce:
1. Body Part Puppet Show: Students create puppets representing different body parts and perform a puppet show where they talk about the functions of each body part.
2. Healthy Habits Poster: Students create a poster highlighting the importance of taking care of our bodies through healthy habits like eating nutritious food, exercising, and keeping clean (we can inter-relate it with 6th level as an inter-level activity)
3. Body Diagram Project: Students work in pairs to create a life-sized body diagram, labeling and coloring different body parts. They can also include additional information about the functions of each body part.
