Fourth Grade Syllabus

Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year. We are looking forward to working with you to help make your child’s year successful. Fourth Grade believes that it is important that we work together as a team so that your child will have a positive and rewarding experience this year.

Please look at student expectations and behaviors that are required when in a virtual classroom. Students are expected to come to each class prepared every day with:

  • Chromebook (fully charged)

  • paper/pencil

  • **A ready to learn attitude!!

Reading:

The purpose of this course is to help students foster a love for reading with skills on or above grade level. We will be reading a variety of literary and informational texts. We will also be reading material that covers our fourth-grade social studies and science standards. Students will be learning many useful comprehension strategies that will help them become independent readers.

Classwork:It is important for students to put 100 percent effort into all assignments. Students will be taught many reading strategies that they can apply to informational and literary texts. They will also be taught how to infer (figure out) information that isn’t given in the text. It is very important that students can pull information from a text and explain their answers in complete sentences.

Language Arts:

ELA will be taught separately from reading. This will allow us to focus on meeting individual needs on language and writing. Language arts is often integrated with reading throughout the year.

Writing:

Your child will be challenged to write every day. It is a huge part of our curriculum. Each child will be writing in response to stories, as well as stories based on the standards.

Spelling/ Word Study:

Spelling this year will be considered spelling as well as word study. Your child will come up with words based on curriculum terms used in all curricular classrooms. This will be found in the newsletter each week. Your child will be expected to know the meaning of each of their spelling words every week. The student will be required to know the meaning of the words, how to spell the words, and be able to use the word in a sentence which is all a part of their spelling grade.

Math:

Your child will be learning about rounding, adding and subtracting to 100,000, multiplication, division, area, perimeter, geometry, and measurement. Students will be using USATestprep, XtraMath, IXL, and MobyMax. IReady math is the county curriculum for math. XtraMath focuses on basic facts and how fluent your child is at those facts. IXL will be used to practice what we are learning in class. MobyMax is used to strengthen any weaknesses your child may have.

Science

In science, your child will be learning obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to compare and contrast the physical attributes of stars and planets, the position and motion of the Earth and Moon in relation to the Sun; information to demonstrate the water cycle; predicting weather events and infer weather patterns using weather charts/maps and collected weather data; informing about the nature of light and how light interacts with objects; how sound is produced and changed and how sound and/or light can be used to communicate. Lastly, they will obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the roles of organisms and the flow of energy within an ecosystem.

Social Studies

In social studies, your child will be learning to explain and describe causes and events, and results of the American Revolution; analyzing the challenges faced by the framers of the constitution; explain the westward expansion in America; main ideas of the abolitionist and suffrage movement; explain the causes, major events, and consequences of the Civil War; analyze the effects of Reconstruction on American life; locate physical and man-made features; describe how physical systems affect human systems; the structure of the government and the Bill of Rights; and economic understanding.
