Does my son need to cut their hair? Yes, male cadets must maintain a haircut that meets program standards. No mullets, hair designs, or unnatural color. The bulk of the hair can be no more than 3" starting at 0" from the hairline gradually faded into the bulk of the hair. Male cadets can maintain a normal unfaded haircut where the bulk of the hair does not cover the ears or interfere with the wear of the cover.
What are the female hair standards? Females may have short, medium, or long hair. Braids, twists, and locks are appropriate. The diameter for braided hair should be no more than 1/8" in diameter. Long hair is worn in a bun, and the bun cannot be larger than the back of the head. Medium length hair can be worn naturally and cannot extend beyond the collar where rank insignia is worn. Hair color must be natural in nature.
Can I have piercings? Any piercing is unauthorized for males in any uniform. Females are authorized to wear a single earring in each ear while in dress uniforms and are unauthorized to wear any earing in the Marine Corps Combat Utility Uniform.
Will you discipline my son or daughter? All students should arrive with self-discipline. JROTC is not a military prep academy. Students will be expected to display self-discipline and will be held accountable for their actions guided by program and school policy.
Is my son or daughter expected to participate in physical training? Once or more per week the program engages in running, team events, calisthenics, and team building exercises. Physical training is a graded event and required for admittance in the program. If there is a medical condition that has limitations physical training can be modified to meet their needs. However, if they cannot do any physical activity, they will not be able to join JROTC.
How much is the uniform? There is no cost for the uniform. Cadets are issued a complete uniform and are required to turn it in upon the end of the 2nd and 4th semester. However, if they lose, damage, or do not turn in their uniform a hold will be put on their diploma until it is turned in, or money is collected to replace it. The cost of a complete uniform is around $175.00.
