Developmental Progression

Students are expected to meet each year’s grade-specific standards, retain and further develop skills and understandings from previous grades, and steadily progress toward increasingly sophisticated expectations for literacy.

The Middle Grades Developmental Progression illustrates how selected English Language Arts standards and skills develop across the grades 6-8. As students progress from kindergarten through eighth grade, they apply previously learned skills with increasing independence, complexity, and depth.

Use the grade-level visuals to examine how expectations build over time and to support instructional planning that connects prior learning, current grade-level expectations, and preparation for the next grade.
