D. Other Text Material

  1. Other text materials may be selected for use by local school faculties (review committees). Review committees can approve and submit other text materials for county-wide use at a specified grade level. Instructional materials that have been selected by a review committee will be appropriate for all students at the specified grade level. This includes print, non-print and computer software materials provided in multiple copies for use in a total class or with a major segment of such a class that are not found on the State Textbook list. These materials usually include software and class sets of trade books or novels and are not included as part of a system textbook adoption or found on the State Textbook list.

  2. Criteria for selecting other text materials shall be consistent with section II of this procedure for materials' selection and appropriate content area criteria.

Section II - General Criteria for Selection of Materials

  1. Materials shall support and be consistent with the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards (CCGPS), relevant scope and sequence, and objectives of specific courses.

  2. Materials shall be appropriate for the subject area, age, emotional development, ability level, and social development of the students for whom the materials are selected.

  3. Within this context, the following criteria should also be used in the selection of materials:

  • Materials shall meet high standards of quality in factual content and presentation.

  • Materials shall have aesthetic, literary, or social value.

  • Materials chosen shall be written by competent, qualified, authors and producers.

  • Materials shall be chosen that avoid sex role, gender, ethnic stereotyping or biases.

  • Physical format, medium, and appearance of materials shall be suitable for their intended purpose.

  • The materials shall be chosen to recognize the multi-cultural/multi-racial diversity of American society.

  • The materials selected shall be used in compliance with current copyright laws.

  • In the case of software, the materials shall be chosen to meet the Coweta County Schools' network and technical guidelines. The Information Technology Department will provide the technical guidelines and standards for purchasing computer software.


  1. The procedure for other text material selection shall include the following:

(a) Appointment by the principal of a school review committee to review and evaluate other text material for use at the local school; the committee will include a media specialist, a teacher(s), parents, and a student, if applicable. The number of parents on this committee will be at least equal to the number of school staff. The media specialist shall review all recommended materials to ensure against unnecessary duplication of such materials.
