Classroom Procedures

Entering the classroom:

Students are expected to enter the classroom quietly, sit in their seats and have their books, pens/pencils, laptops, and homework out and be ready to listen to teacher instructions. Students should consult the board for the agenda everyday.

Tardy to class:

As stated in the Parent/Student Handbook, a student is tardy if they are more than three minutes late to class. If a student is tardy, they should complete an entry in the ‘tardy book’ (ask teacher/assistant) detailing the date of class, the time they entered, and the reason for tardiness. After class, the teacher will confer with the student.

After three tardies, will be written up and will have to serve a lunch detention with the Dean. If a student is more than 10 minutes late, it is considered excessively tardy and student will receive an immediate write up and will serve a lunch detention with the Dean.

Paper/Pencil:

Most assignments will be completed using Chromebooks. If paper, pen, or pencils are required, students may always borrow a pen or pencil from the teacher, but they are reminded that writing utensils are required as part of being prepared for class.

How to find out what the daily assignments are:

Daily assignments will always be posted on the agenda for the day on the whiteboard. Homework assignments will be posted on the board for students to copy into their Google calendars. Assignments will usually be available on Google Classroom. If a paper copy is preferred, the students can complete the assignment on paper. If a student loses an assignment, they should log on to Google Classroom and complete the assignment online or print out a new copy.

Homework

Students will be assigned homework periodically. The work will involve reviewing notes and studying for test and quizzes.

Turning in assignments:

Homework assignments will be checked in by the classroom assistant at the beginning of the period. Please, have assignments out and ready to be checked in when the second bell rings.

Returning assignments to students:

Completed assignments will be submitted, logged in gradebook, and be returned to student within a week.

Finding out grade status:

Students may ask for a grade report at any time.

Student responsibilities after an absence:

Upon returning to class, students are expected to check with the teacher about any missed assignments/tests at the beginning of the class. Students will have up to 4 days to make up any missed assignments, depending on the length of the absence. They are expected to make up any missed test on the day of their return to class, unless other arrangements are made.

Late, missing, or incomplete assignments:

Students will always have the opportunity to schedule a time to work on the assignment during lunch or homeroom with either teacher.

Communication procedures with parents/families:

Parents will receive Supplemental Reports at the end of the 1st and 3rd quarters, and will receive Progress Reports at the end of each semester. Parents are always welcome to email Ms. Kocis at akocis@coveschool.org or Mrs. Blaul at sblaul@coveschool.org. We prefer emails, because we are often teaching a class or in a meeting during the day and unable to receive phone calls.

Ending class:

Five minutes before the end of class, students are given time to record their homework assignments, pack up their materials, and clean up their work areas. Students are expected to remain in their seats until I dismiss them after the bell rings.

Consequences for Classroom Rule Violations:

When someone is breaking a rule, I follow the procedures below and apply relevant consequences.

  • The first time, I remind the student about the rule, and refer to our classroom posters, which display the rules.
  • The second time, I will conference quietly with the student.
  • If the behavior persists, I will speak to the student privately in the hallway to identify the rule violation and determine a strategy for rejoining the class.
  • In the event that the behavior persists or in instances of severe behavior, students will be referred to the Dean’s office.

If there are repeated problems, parents will be notified through email or by phone. In this way, we can work together to solve any issues that are persistent.
