FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ'S)
Extended School Year (ESY) refers to an educational program that is provided to students with disabilities beyond the regular school year. The purpose of ESY is to prevent significant regression in the learning and skills gained during the regular school year, particularly for students with special needs or disabilities. The program is designed to support the individualized education plan (IEP) goals of students and ensure that they maintain the progress they have made.
ESY services may include academic instruction, related services (such as speech therapy or occupational therapy), and other support services to prevent substantial regression in skills.
ESY is not mandatory for all eligible students. The decision to participate is typically made collaboratively by the IEP team, including input from parents.
ESY is designed for students with disabilities who require additional instructional time beyond the regular school year to prevent regression and maintain the skills they have learned. Eligibility for ESY is determined on an individual basis through the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP).
Parents can contact their child's IEP team to inquire about ESY services. Information about ESY is often communicated through the IEP process and determined through a team approach analyzing undo regression or a lack of academic recoupment.
